Quasinormal modes in kink-antikink interactions: a toy model (1905.00835v1)

João G. F. Campos, Azadeh Mohammadi

2019-05-02

We study excitations and collisions of kinks in a scalar field theory where the potential has two minima with symmetry. The potential is designed in order to create a square well potential in the stability equation of the kink excitations. The stability equation is analogous to the Schr"{o}dinger equation where we use quantum mechanical techniques to study the system. We modify the square well potential continuously which allows tunneling of the eigenfunctions and therefore turning the normal modes of the kink into quasinormal modes. We show that our model exhibits fractal resonance windows due to resonant energy exchange mechanism, which disappear as the normal modes of the kink become quasinormal modes.

Topology, geometry and mechanics of strongly stretched and twisted filaments (1905.00796v1)

Nicholas Charles, Mattia Gazzola, L. Mahadevan

2019-05-02

Soft elastic filaments that can be stretched, bent and twisted exhibit a range of topologically and geometrically complex morphologies that include plectonemes, solenoids, knot-like and braid-like structures. We combine numerical simulations of soft elastic filaments that account for geometric nonlinearities and self-contact to map out these structures in a phase diagram that is a function of extension and twist density, consistent with previous experimental observations. By using ideas from computational topology, we also track the interconversion of link, twist and writhe in these geometrically complex physical structures. This allows us to explain recent experiments on fiber-based artificial muscles that use the conversion of writhe to extension or contraction, exposing the connection between topology, geometry and mechanics in an everyday practical setting.

What kinds of KdV-type equations are allowed by an uneven bottom (1903.04890v3)

Anna Karczewska, Piotr Rozmej

2019-03-07

In this study, we give a survey of derivations of KdV-type equations with an uneven bottom for several cases when small (perturbation) parameters are of different orders. Six different cases of such ordering are discussed. Surprisingly, for all these cases the Boussinesq equations can be made compatible only for the particular piecewise linear bottom profiles, and the correction function has a universal form. For such bottom relief, several new KdV-type wave equations are derived. These equations generalize the KdV, the extended KdV (KdV2), the fifth-order KdV (KdV5) and the Gardner equations.

Homotopy Analysis Technique for a Generalised (1+1)-Dimensional KdV Equation of Variable Coefficients (1904.13306v2)

Ali Joohy

2019-04-26

In this work, an exact solution to a new generalized nonlinear KdV partial differential equations has been investigated using homotopy analysis techniques. The mentioned partial differential equation has been solved using homotopy perturbation method (HPM). In details, the study is divided into two cases; the first case is that the linear part is the velocity (the first derivative with respect to time), and the initial guess was chosen at the initial time or the boundary values. Next, the other case was that the linear part consists of many linear terms from the equation, the chosen terms constructed a partial differential equation whose solution can be gained easily. Eventually, some plots of the found solutions have demonstrated the convergent behaviors of the solutions.

On the compact wave dynamics of tensegrity beams in multiple dimensions (1905.00234v1)

Andrea Micheletti, Giuseppe Ruscica, Fernando Fraternali

2019-05-01

This work presents a numerical investigation on the nonlinear wave dynamics of tensegrity beams in 1D, 2D and 3D arrangements. The simulation of impact loading on a chain of tensegrity prisms and lumped masses allows us to apply on a smaller scale recent results on the propagation of compression solitary waves in 1D tensegrity metamaterials. Novel results on the wave dynamics of 2D and 3D beams reveal - for the first time - the presence of compact compression waves in two- and three-dimensional tensegrity lattices with slender aspect ratio. The dynamics of such systems is characterized by the thermalization of the lattice nearby the impacted regions of the boundary. The portion of the absorbed energy moving along the longitudinal direction is transported by compression waves with compact support. Such waves emerge with nearly constant speed, and slight modifications of their spatial shape and amplitude, after collisions with compression waves traveling in opposite direction. The analyzed behaviors suggest the use of multidimensional tensegrity lattices for the design and additive manufacturing of novel sound focusing devices.

Integrability properties of symmetric 4+4-dimensional heavenly type equation (1905.00887v1)

2019-05-02

We demonstrate that the dispersionless -dressing method developed before for general heavenly equation is applicable to the and - dimensional symmetric heavenly type equations. We introduce generating relation and derive the two-form defining the potential and equation for it. We develop the dressing scheme, calculate a class of special solutions and demonstrate that reduction from -dimensional equation to four-dimensional general heavenly equation can be effectively performed on the level of the dressing data. We consider also the extension of the proposed scheme to -dimensional case.

Nonlocal transformations of the Generalized Liénard type equations and dissipative Ermakov-Milne-Pinney systems (1905.00610v1)

Partha Guha, A Ghose-Choudhury

2019-05-02

We employ the method of nonlocal generalized Sundman transformations to formulate the linearization problem for equations of the generalized Li'enard type and show that they may be mapped to equations of the dissipative Ermakov-Milne-Pinney type. We obtain the corresponding new first integrals of these derived equations, this method yields a natural generalization of the construction of Ermakov-Lewis invariant for a time dependent oscillator to (coupled) Li'enard and Li'enard type equations. We also study the linearization problem for the coupled Li'enard equation using nonlocal transformations and derive coupled dissipative Ermakov-Milne-Pinney equation. As an offshoot of this nonlocal transformation method when the standard Li'enard equation, x + f(x)x_ + g(x) = 0, is mapped to that of the linear harmonic oscillator equation we obtain a relation between the functions f(x) and g(x) which is exactly similar to the condition derived in the context of isochronicity of the Li'enard equation.

Conformal Mechanics of Planar Curves (1905.00488v1)

Jemal Guven, Gregorio Manrique

2019-05-01

It is possible to associate curvature-dependent M"obius invariant energies with planar curves. They are of some interest because their tension-free stationary states, lacking a length scale, form self-similar curves. As such one would expect these energies to show up in self-similar growth processes. The simplest is the conformal arc-length. Its tension-free states are logarithmic spirals characterized by the rate of growth. In this paper, we will show how this invariant system can be approached from a mechanical point of view. Central to this approach is the identification of the four currents conserved along stationary curves: the tension and torque associated with Euclidean invariance; in addition scalar and vector currents reflect the invariance under scaling and special conformal transformations respectively. It will be shown that the conformal Casimir invariant, proportional to the conformal curvature, can be decomposed in terms of these currents. This approach permits the familiar geometrical properties of logarithmic spirals to be reinterpreted in mechanical terms, while suggesting new ones. In logarithmic spirals, not just the tension but also the special conformal current vanish with respect to a reference frame centered on the spiral apex. The torque and the scaling current S are constrained to satisfy 4MS=1 in these states. In higher order M"obius invariant theories, logarithmic spirals generally get decorated by self-similar internal structure.
