Thermodynamics of Chemical Waves (1904.08874v1)

2019-04-18

Chemical waves constitute a known class of dissipative structures emerging in reaction-diffusion systems. They play a crucial role in biology, spreading information rapidly to synchronize and coordinate biological events. We develop a rigorous thermodynamic theory of reaction-diffusion systems to characterize chemical waves. Our main result is the definition of the proper thermodynamic potential of the local dynamics as a nonequilibrium free energy density and establishing its balance equation. This enables us to identify the dynamics of the free energy, of the dissipation, and of the work spent to sustain the wave propagation. Two prototypical classes of chemical waves are examined. From a thermodynamic perspective, the first is sustained by relaxation towards equilibrium and the second by nonconservative forces generated by chemostats. We analytically study step-like waves, called wavefronts, using the Fisher-Kolmogorov equation as representative of the first class and oscillating waves in the Brusselator model as representative of the second. Given the fundamental role of chemical waves as message carriers in biosystems, our thermodynamic theory constitutes an important step toward an understanding of information transfers and processing in biology.

A trio of heteroclinic bifurcations arising from a model of spatially-extended Rock-Paper-Scissors (1904.08675v1)

2019-04-18

One of the simplest examples of a robust heteroclinic cycle involves three saddle equilibria: each one is unstable to the next in turn, and connections from one to the next occur within invariant subspaces. Such a situation can be described by a third-order ordinary differential equation (ODE), and typical trajectories approach each equilibrium point in turn, spending progressively longer to cycle around the three points but never stopping. This cycle has been invoked as a model of cyclic competition between populations adopting three strategies, characterised as Rock, Paper and Scissors. When spatial distribution and mobility of the populations is taken into account, waves of Rock can invade regions of Scissors, only to be invaded by Paper in turn. The dynamics is described by a set of partial differential equations (PDEs) that has travelling wave (in one dimension) and spiral (in two dimensions) solutions. In this paper, we explore how the robust heteroclinic cycle in the ODE manifests itself in the PDEs. Taking the wavespeed as a parameter, and moving into a travelling frame, the PDEs reduce to a sixth-order set of ODEs, in which travelling waves are created in a Hopf bifurcation and are destroyed in three different heteroclinic bifurcations, depending on parameters, as the travelling wave approaches the heteroclinic cycle. We explore the three different heteroclinic bifurcations, none of which have been observed in the context of robust heteroclinic cycles previously. These results are an important step towards a full understanding of the spiral patterns found in two dimensions, with possible application to travelling waves and spirals in other population dynamics models.

Vortex knots on 3D lattices of nonlinear oscillators coupled by space-varying links (1904.07827v2)

Victor P. Ruban

2019-04-16

Quantized vortices in a complex wave field described by a defocusing nonlinear Schr"odinger equation with a space-varying dispersion coefficient are studied theoretically and compared to vortices in the Gross-Pitaevskii model with external potential. A discrete variant of the equation is used to demonstrate numerically that vortex knots in 3D arrays of oscillators coupled by specially tuned weak links can exist for as long times as many tens of typical vortex turnover periods.

Frictional interfaces exhibits a very rich dynamical behavior due to frictional interactions. This work focuses on the transition between spatially localized and propagating stick-slip motion. To overcome the difficulties related to the non-smoothness of the friction law we have studied two models: (model I) a friction-excited chain of weakly coupled oscillators excited by a frictional moving belt and (model II) a chain of Van der Pol oscillators. The two models show very similar dynamical features. Both exhibit discrete breathers (i.e. spatially localized periodic solutions) solutions for low coupling and show propagation along the chain of high amplitude limit cycles for stronger elastic coupling between the unit cells. In both models the transition from discrete breathers to propagating limit cycles happens through a nucleation process and, above a certain critical coupling, the velocity of propagation scales linearly with the elastic coupling coefficient. We suggest that dynamical features similar to what was demonstrated in this work are expected for models that are different quantitatively but preserve the same single-unit topology.

We consider the dynamical model of a binary bosonic gas trapped in a symmetric dual-core cigar-shaped potential. The setting is modeled by a system of linearly-coupled one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equations with the cubic self-repulsive terms and quadratic attractive ones, which represent the Lee-Huang-Yang corrections to the mean-field theory in this geometry. The main subject is spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of quantum droplets (QDs), followed by restoration of the symmetry, with respect to the symmetric parallel-coupled trapping cores, following the increase of the QD's total norm. The SSB transition and inverse symmetry-restoring one form a bifurcation loop, whose shape in concave at small values of the inter-core coupling constant, , and convex at larger . The loop does not exist above a critical value of . At very large values of the norm, QDs do not break their symmetry, featuring a flat-top shape. Some results are obtained in an analytical form, including an exact front solution connecting constant zero and finite values of the wave function. Collisions between moving QDs are considered too, demonstrating a trend to merger into breathers.

Rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers, Meijer -functions and matrix integrals (1904.03770v2)

M. Bertola, J. Harnad

2019-04-07

The quantum spectral curve equation associated to KP -functions of hypergeometric type serving as generating functions for rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers is solved by generalized hypergeometric series. The basis elements spanning the corresponding Sato Grassmannian element are shown to be Meijer -functions, or their asymptotic series. Using their Mellin integral representation, the -function, evaluated at the trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix, is expressed as a matrix integral.

The propagator of the finite XXZ spin- chain (1808.06279v3)

G. Z. Fehér, B. Pozsgay

2018-08-20

We derive contour integral formulas for the real space propagator of the spin- XXZ chain. The exact results are valid in any finite volume with periodic boundary conditions, and for any value of the anisotropy parameter. The integrals are on fixed contours, that are independent of the Bethe Ansatz solution of the model and the string hypothesis. The propagator is obtained by two different methods. First we compute it through the spectral sum of a deformed model, and as a by-product we also compute the propagator of the XXZ chain perturbed by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction term. As a second way we also compute the propagator through a lattice path integral, which is evaluated exactly utilizing the so-called -basis in the mirror (or quantum) channel. The final expressions are similar to the Yudson representation of the infinite volume propagator, with the volume entering as a parameter. As an application of the propagator we compute the Loschmidt amplitude for the quantum quench from a domain wall state.

Squared eigenfunction symmetry of the DmKP hierarchy and its constraint (1904.08108v1)

Kui Chen, Cheng Zhang, Da-jun Zhang

2019-04-17

In this paper squared eigenfunction symmetry of the differential-difference modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (DmKP) hierarchy and its constraint are considered. Under the constraint, the Lax triplets of the DmKP hierarchy, together with their adjoint forms, give rise to the positive relativistic Toda (R-Toda) hierarchy. An invertible transformation is given to connect the positive and negative R-Toda hierarchies. The positive R-Toda hierarchy is reduced two differential-difference Burgers hierarchies. We also consider another DmKP hierarchy and show that its squared eigenfunction symmetry constraint gives rise to a decomposition of the Volterra hierarchy. In addition, we revisit the Ragnisco-Tu hierarchy which is a squared eigenfunction symmetry constraint of the differential-difference Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (DKP) system. An one-field reduction is found to reduce the Ragnisco-Tu hierarchy to the Volterra hierarchy.

Integrable semi-discretizations of the Davey-Stewartson system and a -dimensional Yajima-Oikawa system. I (1904.07924v1)

Takayuki Tsuchida

2019-04-16

The integrable Davey-Stewartson system is a linear combination of the two elementary flows that commute: and . In the literature, each elementary Davey-Stewartson flow is often called the Fokas system because it was studied by Fokas in the early 1990s. In fact, the integrability of the Davey-Stewartson system dates back to the work of Ablowitz and Haberman in 1975; the elementary Davey-Stewartson flows, as well as another integrable -dimensional nonlinear Schr"odinger equation proposed by Calogero and Degasperis in 1976, appeared explicitly in Zakharov's article published in 1980. By applying a linear change of the independent variables, an elementary Davey-Stewartson flow can be identified with a -dimensional generalization of the integrable long wave-short wave interaction model, called the Yajima-Oikawa system: , . In this paper, we propose a new integrable semi-discretization (discretization of one of the two spatial variables, say ) of the Davey-Stewartson system by constructing its Lax-pair representation; the two elementary flows in the semi-discrete case indeed commute. By applying a linear change of the continuous independent variables to an elementary flow, we also obtain an integrable semi-discretization of the -dimensional Yajima-Oikawa system.

Conformal symmetry breaking and self-similar spirals (1904.06876v1)

Jemal Guven

2019-04-15

Self-similar curves are shown to arise naturally as tension-free stationary states of conformally invariant energies. Planar logarithmic spirals are associated with the simplest such energy, the conformal arc-length, and their remarkable properties follow as a consequence of this invariance and the manner of its breaking. In this paper their three-dimensional analogues will be constructed explicitly. The qualitative behavior of these states is controlled by two parameters, the conserved scaling current S and the magnitude of the torque M. If the spiral apex is located at the origin, the conserved conformal current vanishes. Planar logarithmic spirals sit where M and S are tuned such that 4MS =1 in parameter space. More generally, the spiral exhibits internal structure, nutating between two cones aligned along the torque axis. It expands monotonically as this pattern precesses about this axis. If 4MS<1 and 2S<1 the planar spiral undergoes a discontinuous transition into an expanding deformed helical spiral, bounded between two nested similarly oriented cones. If 4MS>1, however, the cones are identical and oppositely oriented; the torsion changes sign within the nutation cycle where the projection along the torque axis reverses. This transition may be continuous or discontinuous. I will describe the internal structure of the irreducible nutating segment of a spiral and how it gets replicated to generate the complete self-similar geometry. These elementary spirals provide the natural templates against which to compare spiral patterns exhibiting self-similar behavior. In particular, supercritical trajectories (with 4MS>1) approximate rather well the nutating tip of the growing tendril in a climbing plant first described by Darwin. This is probably not a coincidence.
