HAM radio has been around for a long time. When all other forms of communication break down, there's still HAM radio (as long as an EMP hasn't fried your circuitry. I recommend finding your nearest ARRL testing site and taking the exam to get licensed (after studying, of course).

Very true. It's still good to know the communication protocols, though. It keeps communication lines clear for emergency traffic.
