July 2019 Previews Catalog Recommendations

Here are my recommendations and thoughts for the July 2019 Previews Catalog for items generally shipping in September of 2019. The #campuscomicscast will be discussing this issue of Previews in episode 47 of the #podcast which should available now in your favorite #podcast app. And if you have a book you think I should be looking at, please let me know in the comments!

DC

5 – Powers: The Best Ever hardcover graphic novel is billed as the final story for Christian Walker and returns Bendis to the characters he created.
9 – Harleen 1 gives Harley Quinn the DC Black label treatment. Written and drawn by Stjepan Sejic as a 3 issue over-sized series.
10 – The Legion of Super-Heroes returns to the DC Universe with Millennium 1, the first of a 2 part limited series. Written by Bendis and includes art by Jim Lee.
12 – DCeased: A good Day to Die 1. I feel like this book was solicited before, but here is a one shot with Big Barda and Mr. Miracle in the DCeased story. Horror movie variant cover is available.
13 – Flash Forward 1 attempts to redeem Wally West to the DC Universe after Heroes in Crisis. I have not finished Heroes in Crisis yet, so I do not know the full extent of what happened, but needless to say I have not liked what I heard. Wally had a good story arch in the pages of the regular Flash series and now they have kind of ruined him for the time being after initially giving him an important part in DC Rebirth. 6 issue series.
15 – Gotham City Monsters 1 spins puts many of the DC “Monsters” into their own 6 issue limited series.
16 – Inferior Five 1 takes place in the wake of Invasion, which I had no idea was still part of DC continuity. By Jeff Lemire and Keith Giffen, so it could be pretty good, but I am not sure I want to jump on for 12 issues.
18 – DC joins the dollar book club for 4 titles including issue 1 of Crisis.
19 – Naomi jumps into Action comics in issue 1015. Naomi has been a surprise book, so this might be a story to keep an eye on.
22 – As Tom King’s run on Batman nears its end, you should be checking it out. This story arc will lead into a 12 issue Batman and Catwoman limited series.
25 – Batman/Superman 2 gives us a Dark Multiverse verse version of Shazam. Could be a hot book as some of the Dark Universe characters first appearances have increased in value.
32 – Deadshot makes an appearance in Detective 1011.
47 – Justice League 32 has an appearance from Kamandi.
48 – Justice League Dark issue 15 has a Detective Chimp Variant cover.
53 – Red hood: Outlaw 38. Not sure who this is on the cover, but it looks like Groot and doomsday had a kid.
58 – More Legion of Super-heroes in Superman 15.
63 – Wonder Twins is now a 12 issue series with issue 7.
72 – A Very DC Halloween trade ships just in time for Halloween with 18 eerie DC stories.
73 – Doomsday Clock hardcover volume 1 reprints issues 1 to 6. This should have been released about 4 months ago.
78 – Naomi issues 1 to 6 are given hardcover treatment.
83 – Superman: Red Son gets a new printing. This should probably be a Black Label book, but it is not.

Marvel

2 – JJ Abrams takes the helm for a new 5 issue Spiderman series. I am always a bit concerned when someone from outside the comics field starts writing a book. Sometimes its great. Like JMS on Thor, and other times, it is not so great.
6 – Strikeforce 1. Hey, I know, lets take all the characters we do not know what to do with and stick them in one book. That has to be good, right?
12 – OK, Marvel Comics 1000 was a ridiculous gimmick, but Marvel continues it with Marvel comics 1001. Billed as “ who is the mysterious new character from Marvel’s past.” Oxymoron much?
15 to 24– Absolute Carnage continues.
25 – so, with Mad closing shop, parody magazines must be a money make, so Marvel brings back Crazy with a new number 1.
26 – A new Black Widow limited series written by Jody Houser, who seems to be getting a lot of work these days.
28 – King Thor by Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic. These two had a great run on Thor early on. Some of Aaron’s magic has left me recently, but I may give it one more shot.
46 – the True Believers line gets a little gamma with multiple Hulk reprints, including the first Professor Hulk story, the first Red Hulk, Hulk 2099, and the other Hulk.
48 – I did not realize that Dan slot was writing Iron Man, and this issue has Machine Man in it. Prediction, iron Man 2020 will show up in this title soon.
69 – Issue 20 of Dr. Strange is being billed as the last issue. That is, until next month.
83 – Alpha Flight True North 1 is being billed as the having the greatest creators the Great White North has to offer. I don’t see John Byrne on the list, so WRONG.
84 – New Mutants: War Children 1. Hey, it is Claremont plus Bill Sienkiewicz and it is a one shot. Why not.
88 – Conan the Barbarian is back this month.
107 – New printing of Bendis’ run on Daredevil. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
129 – Spiderman Life Story makes it to trade. I am really looking forward to reading this story.
130 – I would like to point out they cut off the bottom of this image for the Captain America trade, but the shield is still way too small.
137 – Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge makes it to trade.
142 – Write Your Own Marvel TPB. So, we have adult coloring books, now you can fill in the word balloons.

Side One

28 – Get your own copy of Previews to play along at home.
32 – There are some really good Halloween books for ComicFest this year from DC, Marvel, and others
60 – Congrats to Todd McFarlane for now having the longest running creator owned comic ever with Spawn issue 301.
61 – the write-up for this new Warren Ellis book, Trees: Three Fates makes no sense. “ In a remote Russian village of Toska, there’s a dead body by the left of the Tree that landed eleven years ago.” I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. But, it is Warren Ellis, so I will give it a shot.
71 – The final trade of the Walking Dead.
75 – finally read the first volume of Die. I really liked it. Fans of the old Dungeon & Dragons cartoon looking for a more mature take on the general idea should check it out.
89 – The Walking Dead 195 is being solicited, but the series ended with issues 192. Or is this just a crazy Kirkman marketing ploy?
200 – Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt hardcover. I am thinking about picking this up. I have not read any Peter Cannon books, and this is the Charlton character that Watchman’s Ozymandias is based on.
212 – A prequel to the Netflix Dark Crystal series. 12 issues of Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
216 – New Firefly one shot from Boom, Firefly: The Sting. The women of Firefly pull off their own heist. One story told from 5 different perspectives.
324 to 325 – Some signed and/or remarked copies of Walking Dead 192. This book is kind of hot right now so it will be interesting to see if it makes it to Dynamic Forces or not.
335 – The Overstreet Price Guide has a BIG edition with over-sized print.
406 – Titan Comics brings us the third issue of Blade Runner 2019.
407 – Doctor Who: The 13th Doctor gives us a new time Lord created by Neal Gaiman.
415 – Valiant is offering a pre-order bundle for issues 1 to 12 of Bloodshot available only from your local comic shop
477 – ¾ sleeve Batman T-Shirt of one of the classic Joke Card covers.

Side Two

16 – Rocketeer statue from Diamond Select.
29 – Captain America Statue based on Steranko’s Captain America issue 111.
55 – If you need an under-sized Cap shield to recreate the awful Alex Ross cover, here you have it.
