It looks slimey to me, was it? If so there is a big chance that Iron oxidizing bacteria have been involved in the mechanics of this deposit and also constitutes a great proportion of the yellow stuff. You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron-oxidizing_bacteria. The interesting point being that there is a microorganism involved in these kind of iron deposits.

Sort:  

it was wet and slimey to touch and the rock was rich with mineral and metal deposits.
