Color Challenge Wednesday Yellow: พระสังกระจาย หรือ พระยิ้ม; Golden Smiling Buddha.

The Smiling Buddha is widely called ‘Phra Sung-Kra-Jai’ in Thailand. This Smiling Buddha was one of the top eighty disciples of the Lord Buddha. His ability to summarise the teachings of the Lord Buddha had made him very well respected and admired in those days.

He and his friends traveled to see the Lord Buddha in India in order to invite the Buddha to go to his town to give a sermon. Instead, all the travellers stayed to study Buddhism and ordained as monks. The Buddha told him and his friends to go back to his town to teach Buddhism and said there was no need for the Teacher to go as he (Phra Sung-Kra-Jai) would become well respected by the king and people. So, Phra Sung-Kra-Jai went back home and starting teaching people Buddhism. He became very well- known and admired.

But trouble was that he was an extremely handsome monk and his skin was said to be as beautiful as gold. So he was a very handsome and attractive monk; this became quite distracting and raised many issues concerning female admirers. As he wanted people to learn Buddhism and not to be attracted by his physical beauty, he decided to make a wish to transform his body into a fat monk. He is also a bodhisattva called ‘Phra Ariya’ and he is supposed to be reincarnated as the fifth Buddha in the future.

His statue of a big fat monk was originally created by artist in the Song Dynasty in China according to the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism. During the Song Dynasty, the world of art and culture became highly developed; Song Dynasty had created one of the most important heritage in Chinese history. The Chinese believe that to have a Smiling Buddha in their shrine room would bring good health, good fortune and prosperity to their families. During the New Year, some Thai-Chinese would present a smiling Buddha statue as a gift to their loved ones to bring them blessings for the coming year.

พระสังกระจาย หรือพระสังกัจจายน์ ที่เราเห็นเป็นรูปปั้นพระจีนอ้วน มีพุงพุ้ย หน้าตายิ้มใจดีและมีหูยาว และจะมีเด็กซนๆห้าคนปีนป่ายอยู่ใกล้ท่าน นี่เป็นการออกแบบปั้นตามคติของพุทธสายมหายานในราชวงศ์ซ่งของจีน เดิมท่านเป็นบุตรของพราหมณ์ปุโรหิตในกรุงอุชเชนี ท่านและเพื่อนอีกเจ็ดคนได้รับมอบหมายจากเจ้าเมือง ให้ไปตามหาพระพุทธเจ้าและนิมนต์ท่านมาเทศน์ที่เมืองอุชเชนี เมื่อได้เข้าเฝ้าพระพุทธเจ้าแล้วทั้งแปดคนก็ออกบวชเพื่อศึกษาพระธรรม จนได้เป็นศิษย์เอกในทั้งหมดแปดสิบคน แล้วพระพุทธเจ้าได้บอกให้พระสังกัจจายน์กลับไปเผยแพร่พุทธศาสนาที่บ้านเกิดของตนเอง ซึ่งท่านจะมีคนเลื่อมใสศรัทธามาก

ทุกอย่างเป็นไปตามที่พระพุทธเจ้าได้ทรงตรัสไว้ มีผู้คนออกบวชกันมากมาย แต่เพราะท่านมีรูปโฉมที่งดงามและสง่ามาก และผิวพรรณของท่านก็งดงามดั่งประกายทองคำ ทำให้เหล่าหญิงสาวมีความไหวหวั่นและคนจะมองความงามทางรูปก่อน หากจะให้คนศึกษาธรรมะโดยไม่ให้เสียสมาธิ ท่านจึงอธิฐานจิตขอให้ร่างกายของท่านกลายเป็นอ้วนลงพุง ไม่ให้มีความหล่อความงดงามเหลือเลย ท่านจึงกลายเป็นพระยิ้มอย่างที่เรารู้จักกันทุกวันนี้ นอกจากนี้ท่านเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ที่จะมากลับชาติเกิดเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าองค์ที่ห้า หรือองค์สุดท้ายของอสงไขย์นี้

คนจีนมักจะบูชาท่านเพราะเชื่อว่า จะนำโชคลาภ สุขภาพที่ดี และความร่ำรวยมาให้ครอบครัว และท่านจะนำความสุขมาให้เพราะท่านยิ้มเสมอ เหมือนให้กำลังใจในการต่อสู้อุปสรรคต่างๆ ช่วงนี้ใกล้ปีใหม่แล้วจึงนำเรื่องพระสังกัจจายน์มาเล่าสู่กันฟัง จะได้มีพลังดีๆเก็นตุนสำรองไว้ก่อนปีใหม่
