Beautiful and Delicious - Wednesday Yellow Colorchallenge

This delicate yellow squash blossom is not only beautiful, it's also edible! The little honeybee nestled deep withing the flower certainly seems to think so too!DSC_0430.jpg
The culinary possibilities for this beautiful flower are endless. Squash blossoms are most often stuffed with ricotta, then battered and fried. They can also be added to frittatas, tacos, and pasta dishes.

Using them as a colorful topping will perk up even the simplest of salads or soups!

Squash blossoms aren't just beautiful to look at, they're also high in calcium and iron and especially high in vitamins C and A.

It's funny, these kind of things are high cuisine in city restaurants but for someone living a simple life with an abundant vegetable garden it's simply part of the annual cycle of natural abundance that they receive without thinking about status, money or fashionable cuisine... not that those things are "wrong", but just it's kinda funny that the different types of people who will enjoy these flowers cooked as you describe couldn't be more different in terms of their values and lifestyles. All the people in between don't even know anything about them! ;)

How true! Thanks for your interesting observation ;)

And further, could it be because of the common ground that the two poles align a bit? Like do down-to-earth homesteaders with their dirty dungarees become more foodie because of all the interest the cooking world gives to fresh organic wildcrafted etc produce, and do people floating about the high cuisine world align themselves a bit more with the principles and values of homesteading, foraging and agroecology etc because of the increased attention they give these worlds through their interest in the organic healthy etc food trends?? I think in sociology that is called frame alignment.

Very interesting--I think you could write an entire post about that. Thanks for your insightful comment---Who knew squash blossoms could be so inspirational:)

Well, the truth is I hope to write an entire PhD thesis about that!!

I wish you all the best with your studies----will be an interesting thesis

Errrrr, here's hoping! I have 6 months to write it. Eek

You can do it! Just make each day count and you'll get there

very interesting, and will have to try this, and I am now following you

Thank you and following you as well. If you enjoy my posts, your upvote would also be appreciated. Thanks.

I never knew that you could eat squash blossoms! I love squash, there are so many recipes that it can be included in. I've tried it battered and fried, so yummy with ranch dressing.
Now I'm thinking about stir-fry, and need to get some summer squash!

They don't have a lot of flavor in and of themselves, but they have amazing color and make whatever you've prepared look impressive!

I have always thought that squash blossoms are so pretty. I never knew they were edible too. Very interesting! Great shot of the honey bee! : )

Thank you whatisnew--I always feel lucky when nature and its little critters cooperate with my photographic endeavors---in this case the honeybee! Hope you enjoy trying the squash blossoms : )

As you can tell, I am not good at keeping up with checking on posts. I will have to do a better job. Your yellow squash blossoms are so vibrant and colorful. Squash is one of my favorites to eat.
