There are very few naturally blue flowers. Blue Delphinium is one of them. These beautiful plants have tall stalks with many blooms, displaying shades of blue, indigo, and violet.

They are a popular cut flower in floral shops. In my experience, they are a long-lasting cut flower and add a lovely splash of blue to my arrangements.

Delphinium can also be a pleasant perennial addition to your garden, but they are rather picky plants and can be difficult to grow. They do not take well to strong wind or sudden bursts of rain.

According to the Old Farmers Almanac, if you want to grow these blue beauties you need to plant in:

  • Springtime
  • Fertile, well-drained soil—mix in 2 to 4 inches of compost
  • Full sun to light shade, with shelter from strong winds.
  • Alkaline soil
  • Climates with cool, moist summers

There are many varieties of Delphinium (also known as Larkspur) and not all are blue. I have seen them in pink, white, and purple as well. There are perennial, annual, and biennial varieties.

For more information on growing Delphinium, you can check out the Old Farmers Almanac at https://www.almanac.com/plant/delphiniums.
