Collection #1: Millions of passwords hacked
It's the biggest data glitch ever loaded into his website's databases, says Troy Hunt. The network security expert is the creator of "Have I Been Pwned? (HIBP; English: "Was I hacked?"), where Internet users check whether fraudsters have stolen their credentials. Hunt himself is affected by the data breakdown. One of his passwords is now circulating on the net, visible to everyone, but fortunately it is an old one that he no longer uses.
Collection #1: Check if your data has been stolen
If you would like to check whether your access data is secure, please visit the HIBP website (https://haveibeenpwned.com/). There you enter your email address(es), press the pwned? button or the Enter button - and then there are two options. If you are lucky, the message "Good news - no pwnage found!" will appear. In this case, your data is safe and you can continue to use your email password combination without being bothered. If you are one of the (many) unlucky ones, the message "Oh no - pwned!" will appear followed by a list of data glitches in which your e-mail address appears. If this list includes the "Collection #1" data glitch, act quickly!
Affected by the data glitch: What to do?
Never use the same password for different services and change your passwords regularly. Avoid weak passwords - the motto is: the more complicated, the better. Secure password words contain at least eight characters, upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. At best, use a special manager - the best password managers can be found in the linked article. Also pay attention here: Use the manager on your smartphone, never leave it unattended and also protect it with a (secure) password.
