The Federal Republic of Germany issued a series of DM (Deutsche Mark) 5 commemorative coins between 1952 and 1986, which were minted alternately by the four German mints. With the cessation of issuance in 1986, the official 5 DM commemorative coins of the Federal Republic of Germany became the irretrievably closed collecting area of German history.

The occasion was the 500th birthday of the artist Albrecht Dürer
Albrecht Dürer the Younger (also Duerer; * May 21, 1471 in Nuremberg; † April 6, 1528 ibid.) was a German painter, graphic artist, mathematician and art theorist. With his paintings, drawings, copperplate engravings and woodcuts he is one of the outstanding representatives of the Renaissance.
