Coffee Series #7 Why Doesn't Caffeine Work For You?

Have you ever wonder why you keep drinking coffee and the caffeine doesn't work on you anymore? Here why!

1. You Are Not Sleeping Enough

Whenever you having not enough sleep you drink coffee to stay awake so that you can continue to work on your stuff. Then, you repeat again for few more nights and you drink few more cups of coffee to stay awake. You then found out caffeine not so effective on your anymore. Yes, it works only for first two nights. Why? When you not enough sleep for more than three nights the coffee caffeine not work on you anymore. This is because your body and mind need to rest. So, instead of keep drinking coffee why not get on the bed and sleep for 9-10 hours to let your body recover and get enough rest.

2. You Have Hit Your Healthy Limit

What do you mean by I have hit my healthy limit? It basically means you drink too many coffees per day and eventually your tolerance toward caffeine increases in the long run that causes the coffee caffeine not working for you anymore.

3. Your Caffeine Sensitively

What is caffeine sensitivity and how does it impact on me? Different people will have a different level of caffeine sensitivity. Sensitivity is actually determined by the efficiency of the body to process it, so it’s not like tolerance that builds over time.

I am no scientist, but this is what I found out. Apparently, there is something called the "caffeine gene" which controls our reaction to caffeine. In simple terms, some people have genes that are more easily affected by caffeine than others. People who are more strongly affected by caffeine are more likely to have gene variations in their DNA. Overall, genetics plays a significant in how caffeine affects you.

There are few levels of sensitively such as hypersensitive, normal, and hyposensitive. Hypersensitive people as the name implies, this group of people react to a small amount of caffeine, you don't need to need much to get going. Even a small amount of caffeine can cause fast heartbeat and insomnia on them.

Most of us fall into normal sensitive which means we can consume about 200-400mg of caffeine and still able to sleep at night without any trouble. People who fall into normal sensitive can consume up to 3 coffees per day. Luckily, I myself considered as normal sensitive and I usually drink two cups of coffees per day. One in the morning and another one after lunch!

Hyposensitive people only react after a big amount of caffeine which is about 500mg of caffeine. If you’re one of these people, you’ll have to drink an awful lot just to feel anything. In this case, you might want to consider other ways to wake yourself up.

So What Should I Do? I Still Love to Drink My Coffee!

Here, few ways for you to try it out:

  1. Reduce your coffee intake gradually daily so that your body gets used to it and maintain the number of cup of coffee consumed daily.
  2. Go for decaf coffee which has lesser caffeine compared to normal coffee
  3. Get yourself enough rest and sleep at night.
