Coffee's of the World - Sumatra Mandheling roasted by me @c0ff33a

in #coffee6 years ago

I do like to share a new roast with you, and this Indonesian coffee although I have sold it as green coffee for other people to roast - this is the first time I have had to roast it myself. It'a a popular coffee and this roast is going into retail bags for a customer.

You might well know the term don't judge a book by it's cover, this applies well to Sumatra Mandheling because the green coffee beans have a distinctive look that could be called "chabby chic" - certainly they are not the best looking beans when green - but once you roast them you produce a delightful coffee with low acidity and heavy body.

Enough talking though, let's get to work and roast this coffee!

Off they go those eclectic green coffee beans, straight into my coffee roasters hot drum.

The drum spins the coffee beans constantly, so they roast evenly all over.

Six minutes in and the colour is changing, as the coffee roasts it darkens in colour and gives off a different smell.

By 12 minutes we have reached the normal dark brown we expect a coffee bean to look. The black and oily beans you might see in the hoppers of certain coffee chains - they have been roasted for a long time into second "crack" - the longer you roast coffee the darker it gets and then oils start emerging from the bean and show on the outside. These dark roasts suit espresso coffee brewing especially - it gives a stronger taste to the coffee. My roasts are mostly aimed at brewing by filter, cafetière, drip filter like Hario or Aeropress - these methods a light roast just after first "crack" brings out subtle flavours and taste lost in the darker roasts.

When the coffee is ready it is released into the cooling tray, air is sucked over the beans to cool them quickly and the mixer levels them and ensures they don't cling together getting hotspots that could cause roasting to continue and make the roast colour uneven.

It's nearly time for the yummy coffee tasting, but before let's learn what my broker says about these beans.

Certainly this sounds tempting, so let's give it a try out.

Those tasty beans in the Aeropress - I measure the beans into the Aeropress - and then tip them into the grinder and grind straight back into the Aeropress ready to brew.

Water off the boil and the coffee blooms nicely.

IMG_5475.JPG

Ready for the plunge, after a short period infusing the coffee the plunger of the Aeropress forces water past the ground extracting the flavour.

By eck it's looking Gorgeous, a rich brew begging to be supped.

And it is delicious, super smooth no acidity and a buttery sweetness I also get from Ethiopian Yirgacheffe. Hints of spice, this is a wonderful coffee and will definitely be added to my roasted coffee offering.

I'm also super excited to be working with @ecoinstant to bring the Steemit community something very unique, I don't want to give the game away just yet but look out very soon for something exciting and groundbreaking.

I love my coffee and the smell of roasting beans. I envy what you do as that would be a dream job. I try and get at least once a month a fresh bag of roasted coffee. I have stopped drinking instant bottle crap years ago and have become very fussy and love experimenting. I found the post very interesting and you must do more .

Thank you very much, I try and do a coffee post when I have a new one to share - I do tend to roast the same origins over and over and most of those I have already posted about - some were so long ago though I could get away with doing them again!

I would look forward to that and nothing wrong with a re run lol.

Enjoy my dear @c0ff3a I miss you
I don't forget you support of my begenning on steemit
And I told my friends to put you name in their list of steemvoter
and those @safouane @louizate @abde @askmee @omarov @teamarabic @soufianeluka who do it now there others will do it
We love you man .

Thank you very much, I have you guys all down on Autovote as well - I can’t get around to every post in person that I would like to but I keep varying who I do reach. I hope you and your family are all keeping well.

MMmmmm, I can smell the coffee! Oh wait, that is my Kau coffee that my coffee grower friend sent! BTW, where did you get your roaster? I want one. When I get back on island, gonna plant a few coffee trees at the cabin.

Thank you very much, my roaster is from Turkey www.toper.com they make a range of sizes to roast 1kg of coffee upto 1000 kilos!

Expensive! Even on ebay...lol . Bet they would work great with cacoa beans too.

Perfect blend to enjoy the cup of coffee there :)

Thank you very much I am pleased you enjoyed it.

That is a heckuva long process that results in a few ounces of liquid!
Coffee drinkers gotta have their brew!

I know, it would be much quicker just to make a banana milkshake!

Zut alors! Zat is zee truth, @c0ff33a. And might I say, adding a leetle of zee coffee to zee banana milkshake... ooh la la! One of Chef Foster's secret recipes. Pleeze do not tell anyone else, or post it in an online blog. Merci.

what a lovely post! yum coffeee and green too, i like that its not acidic and ive never tried it as much as im a huge coffee explorer, strange of me! wish i could try this blend you have 😭😭😭😭

Thank you very much, Sumatra Mandheling is a coffee from a single growing region - coffee from different areas of the world can have different flavours and tastes - Kenya coffee for example is know for being acidic.

@c0ff33a yeah acid and i do not get along. don't you own a coffee shop ? you have a very nice coffee machine. maybe thats what i should do is open a coffee shop .. hmmm

Ooooh, yummy, I think I'll have a cup in honor of this post @c0ff33a, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you and @ecoinstant have in store for us!

BTW, do you ever feel like an outsider for being a coffee guy in such a tea drinking country, or do coffee people and tea people coexist peacefully?🤔😉

Thank you very much, I actually drink a great deal of tea as well - generally in the UK I think we now have a good range of people who drink tea and coffee

Wow, I am a devout coffee lover, but I've never seen the roasting process. So thanks for sharing that!

I'm pleased you enjoyed it, I sell loads of green coffee in 1 kilo bags for people to roast at home - using small machines or even just a tray in the oven.

Does it work very well in an oven? I can imagine it is a bit like roasting nuts...

Holy crap! I knew I liked you! You're an AeroPress Man!!!
Ren

Thank you very much, I use the Aeropress every day and also sell them either on their own or as a gift box with free coffee -which I have roasted of course!

Scott tried the roasting thing, but it didnt last long. The aeropress, however, has clung on.
Ren

Heeey coffee beans from my country, woohoo 💃💃💃💃

Exceptionally nice as well, I do have a few different Indonesians and the Monsoon Malabar is one of my biggest sellers.
