本文是 FastCompany 美國勞動節的(Labor Day)系列報導, Why work has failed us (爲什麽工作讓我們如此失望)的第一篇。
理論上，在美國的全職工作就像是一筆交易。 你每周工作40小時或更長時間來幫助公司賺更多錢。 作爲交換，公司會給你足夠的報酬，以便你可以負擔得起一片屋檐，能讓你看得起病，能給你的孩子營造良好的生活，並且能讓你在爲工作奉獻完青春後，在晚年生活中有足夠的經濟條件來支撐。
第二次世界大戰結束後，正是這種想法幫助並加強了戰後的經濟繁榮，並創造和催生了我們對美國夢的向往：爲公司投入時間，公司爲您打造舒適的生活基礎。 當今，經濟蓬勃發展。 股市飙升，失業率非常低。那爲什麽每個人看起來都過得不太好呢？
最近的一項調查發現，近一半的美國人在緊急情況下無法拿出400美元。 除了非常富裕的人之外，許多城市的住房成本已經飙升。 幼托變得非常昂貴，以至于婦女選擇延遲或完全放棄成家，因爲她們根本負擔不起。 有的人爲了胰島素的藥費，被迫在衆籌網站乞求施舍，如果他們沒有獲得足夠的關注量，等待他們的只有死亡。經濟雖然在發展，但看來經濟繁榮並沒有得到分享。
有一個簡單的解釋：隨著公司利潤的飙升，工資卻一直停滯不前。 自上次經濟衰退結束以來，企業利潤占國民收入的比例已達到過去半個世紀的最高點; 員工薪酬占國民收入的比例一直處于最低潮。那些首席執行官的工資正在上漲，那些股東（最富有的10％的美國人擁有84％的股票）正以股票回購的形式獲得數十億美元的回報，但普通工人收獲的回報卻很少。 技術使每個工人的工作效率大大提高，但額外的生産力創造的財富並沒有以增加工資或減少工作時間的形式分享出來。
如果你每天都在努力工作，但感覺自己在經濟上踩水，那麽你並不孤單。 這幾乎肯定不是你的錯 - 我們會有辦法解決它的。
