This article is the forth part of traveling in Yunnan(part1,part2,part3). We visited Three Pagodas of the Chong Sheng Temple, Ancient City of Dali, rode around Erhai Lake.
Three Pagodas of the Chong Sheng Temple
It takes about 15 minutes by taking the tourist battery car from the South Gate of the ancient city of Dali to the three pagodas temple. The three pagodas temple, backed by Cangshan, facing Erhai, with a very quiet environment, is really a Buddhist shrine.
From the gate area inside, we can see the main tower first. The other two towers due to slightly shorter were obscured by trees. The hills on the back are Cangshan. Although it is not far from the tower, it still takes some time to walk, and a little effort, mainly there are a lot of steps in the scenic area.
keeping going ahead, the three towers will come into view all. Looking back, you can see Erhai.
The main pagoda, named Qianxun pagoda, 69.13 meters high, set up in Quanfengyou period(825~859 A.D) of Nanzhao Kingdom.
The other weo pagodas, built in Dali Kingdom period, one to the north and the other to the south of the main pagoda, both being 42.19 meters high.
Going up the steps, walking through the halls, we can see the scenery in the temple.
Standing on the highest place, looking back the three towers, they are looking like standing out from the thick trees.
When we came down, the sunshine was not so strong, we can see the main tower once again.
Ancient City of Dali
Generally speaking, the interior of the ancient city of Dali is similar to that of Old Town of Lijiang. The biggest difference is that the roads are much less than the atmosphere of Old Town of Lijiang, while Lijiang is more exquisite.
It was almost evening when we were back from the three pagodas temple. Below pictures are the different scenery of the ancient city gate at noon and evening. The gate of the "Dali" two words is writthen by Guo Moruo in 1961 when he visited Dali.
After dinner, the light of the city gate was bright. The passageway under the city gate was crowded with people.
The roads in the ancient city of Dali are relatively wide, a bit like some hutongs in Beijing. Crossroads where someone is singing, it reminds me of Taipei Hsimenting.
Riding around Erhai Lake
Although the name for the Erhai sea, but in fact it is a lake, which is the second largest freshwater lake of Yunnan. It is said that because Yunnan is inland, the Bai people here is yearning of the sea , shaping like ear, so called Erhai.
It seems that you must to be going to Erhai when you come to Dali. Erhai is so big, that if you ask the local people how you can go to Erhai, they may not know how to answer you, so you must clear which part of Erhai that you want to go.
We chose to ride along the West road. Below is our transportation: a storage battery bike.
On the road, you're likely to see someone else's vehicles like this, and it's a big force.
It is very convinent to ride a storage battery bike, you can stop to see the scenery and take photos at any time, but the disadvantage is too shine!
Some sections on the road, we need to pass through several villages. Most of what you can see is this kind of scenery, not directly on the side of the sea.
And also like this, riding through the farmland, enjoying the idyllic scenery.
Finally, on the way back to the ancient city of Dali, we can see the three Pagodas again through Bu er fa men.
Ultraviolet radiation is very strong here, if you choose to ride around the side of Erhai, be sure to make full preparation before you set out.
If you are riding the storage battery bike, you'd better to make a plan deciding how far and how long you want to ride in case that the battery is out of power.
Enjoy your trip in Dali!
