Sanyu's works in the auction has high prices. it's already become indicators of Chinese artists. he died because of gas poisoning. He wasn't famous when he died, and not wealthy.

Still life exemplifies Sanyu's unique style and fully illustrates how Sanyu incorporates eastern aesthetics and western subjects. His earlier still life pieces are warm and sweet, with pastel tones, including paintings of peonies, chrysanthemums, roses, and berries, or lotus vases, symbolizing lasting union, or potted flowers. Sanyu makes a habit of writing inscriptions on flower pots, especially favoring poetry from the Song Dynasty.

Chinese artist loved referring to themselves as literati painters as opposed to professional painters, Sanyu doesn't shy away from using craft symbols directly in his paintings such as patterns symbolizing wealth and longevity, the festive color combination of red and gold, the proud chrysanthemum, graceful peonies, and elegant bamboos. His use of color, structure, and subject matter all show just how deeply eastern aesthetics have influenced him. an assortment of flowers and plants in a traditional woven basket, or a vase, or a flower pot, the unworldly flowers denote a sense of carefree beauty. Also in the flower pot we see rigid deer antlers that are either harsh lines, intricate depictions, or rough brushstrokes that leave viewers in awe of his spontaneous technique.

靜物是常玉獨特風格之表現，也是常遇運用東方美學與西方素材的最佳典範，早期靜物呈現溫馨甜美，包含牡丹、菊花、玫瑰及果實等，或插在瓶中象徵百年好合的荷花，或長於盆內的花朵，常玉習慣在盆面題字，尤其特別偏愛宋代的詩詞。

中國藝術家都愛以文人畫家自居而不是畫畫專家，常玉卻不介意形象的將工藝符號入畫，如象徵富貴的金錢紋、代表長壽的萬壽紋、喜慶節目最愛的紅金色組合、清雅脫俗的菊花、繁花雍容的牡丹、高風亮節的竹子，無輪用色、構圖及題材，皆可看到受東方美學的影響。各式花葉或在傳統編籃內，或在瓶中，或於盆內，瀟灑自在的各式花朵散發獨自的隨意之美，盆中屹立的鹿角狀樹枝筆觸細膩，粗略幾筆總是神來一筆。
