Sewing : Mending, Patching, Repairing - 27 September 2022

The other day when I wrote that I've started sewing I should have added both hand sewing and machine sewing.

These jeans are so worn and literally thread bare just below the back pocket. I needed to deal with that before a proper hole developed.

One could say that beyond a certain point clothes should just not be repaired. I have seen lots of reference online to a Japanese mending technique called Boro and there are many tutorials showing you how; here is one. Properly done 'visible mending' can be seen as an artform in itself. Mine isn’t. The photo above shows a mad attempt at trying to repair a huge tear that developed because the jeans just got worn out. They are still serviceable and should be a sign of care that they even keep going !

I was very pleased with the final result. This was not an example of visible mending as fashion; I was just trying to stop a (another) hole developing.

I’m not really a great follower of fashion but I am aware that we need to be mindful of waste. I have seen a lot of posts on Instagram about textile waste and what we can do about it. I think sometimes making a little start is easier than having big plans.

My sewing may not be neat or great yet but I feel happy I sort of contributed to a good cause.
