Cityscape of Sevilla from La Giralda

in #cityscapephotography7 years ago (edited)

This panoramic view over Sevilla can only be seen from one place: La Giralda, which is what the clock tower of Sevilla's cathedral is called. Originally, this tower was built as the minaret of a mosque during the Moorish reign of the Iberian peninsula.

In a mosque, the main purpose of a minaret is to make the calls for prayer audible in the entire city. Since La Giralda is quite a high tower, the muezzin of Sevilla's mosque refused to do this exhausting climb five times a day, so the clever architect thought of a solution: Instead of stairs, there are 35 platforms inside the tower that are connected with ramps, so the muezzin could comfortably sit back on his donkey that would then walk all the way to the top!

When the Catholic kings of Spain had managed to reconquer Sevilla in 1248, they decided to rebuild the beautiful mosque into a cathedral. On top of the tower, they put a small addition where they used 17 steps, the only steps in the whole tower. So thank you, Spanish kings, that I had to walk all the way up instead of enjoying a donkey ride!
On the other hand, the Christians have found another way to call for prayer than going to the top of the tower in person:

SO Interesting to read about the way they built it so they could ride a mule up there

But wow I would climb stairs for this amazing view

Tip!

Thank you! The climb was really worth the view! But I would still prefer the mule if I had the choice :D The view over the cathedral was impressive as well:

Interesting background to La Giralda's history. We're sure it was worth the effort climbing 17 steps (burning 8.5 calories) to get those views and that photo. It does indeed look quite high compared to the rest of the city. Cathredrals or any religious sites are big to show symbol and status.

The view was totally worth the climb! Sevilla's cathedral really is huge, in fact, it is the third-largest church in the world!

That's another interesting fact! We've been to the largest - it must be the Vatican (St. Peter's Basilica). Thanks @jpphotography :)

Great photos and an interesting story. I just feel bad for that poor donkey who had to climb up there five times a day! Hehe.

Haha I bet the donkey was happy when the Spanish took over the city and installed church bells!

it must be a very interesting architectural structure, being switched from mosque with minaret to a church, need to google that up :)

It is! This is what it looks like:

ooh so romantic looks like a nice warm evening, the sun slowly sets and the last rays are climbing the tower. Beautiful geometric and floral reliefs. Thanks for this shot.
