Durrës in Albania
History: Durrës is one of the most ancient cities in the Mediterranean area. According to tradition, it was initially an Ililyrian settlement. In 627 BC Greek colonists settled in the city. Ancient sources refer to the city both as Epidamnos and Dyrrachium. After the first Ililyrian-Roman war in the year 228 BC Dyrrachium became a Roman Protectorate. It was the most important colony of the Roman province of Macedonia and one of the most reknowned harbors of the Mediterranean, an admirabilis urbs. In 998 AD Durres was invaded by the Bulgarians. 7 Years later the city was liberated by the Byzantine emperor Basil II. During the 11th-14th centuries Durrës was attacked, invaded, and burnt down several times by the Angevins, the Serbs and the armies of Venice. On 15 August 1501, The city was invaded by the Ottomans.
Now: It's the second large City in Albania. Because of the proximity it's invaded by the Italians. You can find a lot of Ice-Cream shops and Restaurants with Pasta or Pizza.
