Church discipline
Good day churchsteem and my fellow steemians.
I will like us to look into the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 5 verse 1 to the end.
First Corinthians was written by Paul, which happen to be his first letter to Corinthians. The letter was written to address the issues of immortality and division in the church.
Churches today are afraid to punish or expel a person from fellowship if found committing formication, adultery, drunkenness, theft and other vices. because they feel they will be accuse of neglect of the mercy, and ignorance of the grace of God.
but paul in his letter to corinthians, in 1corinthians chapter 5: verse 3 - 13 stated it clearly how a christian should be treated, if he fall into fornication, covetousness, idolatry, drunkenness and so on.
In verse 5 of the above chapter, paul said, " such people should be deliver to satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the lord " and verse 6 continue, " your glorying is not good, know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?.
Sin should not be condone in our churches by our relax doctrines and punishment, because it may corrupt the whole church.
I hope I will not be wrong to say, one of the reason why the church today is is filled with different vices is because, the church has impliedly condone such immorality by not giving strict punishment to the offenders, and has gradually corrupt the whole body of Christ.
It was sad and disheartening to have heard a brother in the church saying, " is it not only two week punishment" he made the above quote justifying impregnating a lady before marrying her, with the excuse that he want to confirm her fertility.
The church should endeavor to maintain discipline in the church by correcting anyone who has fall into temptation by means of excommunication or any other punishment, to serve as deterrent to others in the church to prevent the spread of the evil. but while doing so, the church should be careful not to miss the reason for the punishment, which is love, and wanting to save the person from eternal damnation.
