The Franciscan church of Șumuleu

The Franciscan church of Șumuleu Ciuc is one of the most famous architectural monuments, built between 1804-1834 in Baroque style.
It belongs to the best-known shrines of Romania and it is the largest place of pilgrimage in Transylvania.

The Holy Virgin with Jesus the child, with gilded wooden crown on her head. The sculpture, made of a linden trunk, painted and gilded, is the largest among the devotional statues known all over the world, having a total height of 227 cm.

Pontiff Francis visits Romania at the end of May, destinations of the three-day journey are the cities Bucharest, Iasi, Blaj as well as the Marienwallfahrtsort Sumuleu Ciuc.
