The verification is done through SteemConnect, so it's perfectly safe. But, of course, they are not giving the money for nothing - they want to gain new users and paying Steem users is their way of doing that.
They posted somewhere that over 60,000 Steemit accounts were verified by Byteball, without a single problem.
