FOR I THE LORD HAVE SPOKEN
"YOU shall be fuel for the fire; Your blood shall be in the midst of the land. You shall not be remembered, FOR I THE LORD HAVE SPOKEN.’ ”
Ezekiel 21:32 (NKJV)
Comment: It is always a good thing to see the goodness of God. However, when the other side of God is seen; It is not always enjoyable. Before God's sword is brought out of the sheath, according to the illustration in the passage of the Bible; He would have been warning the person or the people concerned.
God instructed His prophet, Prophet Ezekiel to prophesy that He would draw His sword out of the sheath and cut off both the righteous and wicked in the land of Israel (Ezekiel 21:3). In verse 28 of that same chapter 21; God told Ezekiel to prophesy concerning the Amonites (Ezekiel 21:28). It was in that prophecy He said what we have as the text of this teaching.
It is not always a good and palatable thing to see the other side of God; His wrath and punishment or Judgement.
Whoever has carefully studied the Old testament would know that God is fierce and as well as loving and merciful (Exodus 20:5; 2 Corinthians 1:3).
People usually emphasized His love and mercies, but usually do forget that He is a consuming fire also (Hebrews 12:29).
And at times, one may be wondering and asking whether the same God of the Old Testament is that of the New Testament. He is the same God because the Bible says He is the same: " . . . BUT YOU REMAIN THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NEVER END" (Hebrews 1:12 NIV).

The only difference is the propitiation of Jesus Christ. God is still the same fierce or fearful God, but we do have an advocate in this present dispensation:
1 MY LITTLE CHILDREN, THESE THINGS I WRITE TO YOU, SO THAT YOU MAY NOT SIN. AND IF ANYONE SINS, WE HAVE AN ADVOCATE WITH THE FATHER, JESUS CHRIST THE RIGHTEOUS. 2 AND HE HIMSELF IS THE PROPITIATION [atoning sacrifice] FOR OUR SINS, AND NOT FOR OURS ONLY BUT ALSO FOR THE WHOLE WORLD" (1 John 2:1,2 NKJV).
The atoning sacrificial work of Christ Jesus on the cross gives the whole mankind an opportunity to approach God and receive grace and mercy in the time of need (Hebrews 4:16; 10:19,20).
In the Old testament people could not approach God directly; even the high priest who would go to the Holiest of All to offer sacrifices both for himself and the people's sins—that were committed in ignorance—would have to do it courteously. It had to be with fear and trembling (Hebrews 9:6,7).

So the difference between the Old testament God Who seems to be fierce, and the New testament God Who seems to be full of mercy, is the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ for mankind (Hebrews 4:14; 10:20; 1 John 2:2).
God is approachable through the blood of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:19). What many people, even believers, do today that seems insignificant would ordinarily attract sanctions or punishments, even death, in the Old testament. But Christ Jesus in His intercessory ministry in heaven is still standing in the gap for the whole mankind—He is our advocate before God the Father (1 John 2:2).
That being said, God's forbearance and long-suffering should not be taken for granted (Romans 2:4). If anyone, especially believers who have known the truth willfully continue in sins, such should expect God's wrath or Judgement:
26 FOR IF WE SIN WILLFULLY AFTER WE HAVE RECEIVED THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH, THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, 27 BUT A CERTAIN FEARFUL EXPECTATION OF JUDGMENT, AND FIERY INDIGNATION WHICH WILL DEVOUR THE ADVERSARIES" (Hebrews 10:26,27 NKJV).
Someone who has the knowledge of the truth, that is, a believer—especially the one who has been in the faith for awhile —is not expected to willfully committed a Sin. If such did, Judgement would follow.
Thus, the goodness and forbearance of God should not be trivialized or be taken for granted (Romans 2:4,5). If you hardened your heart and continued to willfully disobey or rebel against God; you are treasuring for yourself His wrath: "BUT BECAUSE OF YOUR CALLOUS STUBBORNNESS AND UNREPENTANT HEART YOU ARE [deliberately] STORING UP WRATH FOR YOURSELF ON THE DAY OF WRATH WHEN GOD'S RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT WILL BE REVEALED" (Romans 2:5 Amps).
Peace!
