Our Refuge and Strength

The author of Psalm 46 started the chapter by stating who God is: our Refuge and Strength and an ever-present help in times of need. Understanding God and who He is in our lives is vital. One must establish His relationship to a God he knows. For he cannot love and obey someone he doesn't really know. But it doesn't stop there. This understanding of who God is must have a relevance in one's life in order to really be in a true and meaningful relationship with Him. Verse 2 says, "Therefore we will not fear." The psalmist's understanding of God as his Refuge empowered him and took away his fears. There must be an application of the truth. Knowledge about God will not produce relationship unless you see its relevance in your life. Like the psalmist who sees God as a Refuge and Strength, and then concluded that because of this truth he will not fear, you can also know truths about God and then relate such truths to your life. Then you can also say, "Therefore I will not fear!"
