Bible Study Devotional: John 3:34-36. “He That Believes On The Son Has Everlasting Life”

34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

The words of John are very clear here: Jesus speaks the words of God the Father himself. The Spirit is given in full to Jesus in the flesh, with all the power and glory that goes with the Spirit of God. The words that Jesus spoke and still speaks today are spirit and they are life.

Just think about it, every word, every “red letter” that Jesus has spoken is the very word of the Almighty Creator of the universe and everything in it. Shouldn’t his words mean something to us all? In reality, they mean everything.

35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

Here we get a glimpse of the relationship between God the Father and God the Son. Jesus, as the Son of God, is already the one who inherits all because God is immortal. Jesus has all things given to him because he gave his all for all things. His death and resurrection, as we will see, will ultimately bring healing to the world and offer this healing to everyone in it as well as everything in it. Everything belongs to God the Father. Everything belongs to Jesus. They are one.

The word for “one” in Hebrew and in the Hebraic-thinking of the writers of the New Testament is “ekhad.” This word does not mean “absolute oneness without any division whatsoever.” Rather, it means “unity” and can even be seen as a “collection” that is completely in unison. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are in complete unity. There is no division between them or their purpose. “They” really are One God somehow. For us to pretend that the mystery of God’s being and existence is within our definitions, our understanding and our grasp is foolishness.

The verse above says, “the Father loveth the Son.” I have mentioned before that both the Greek and the Hebrew languages have a number that goes with every letter of their alphabets. This gives every word a certain numerical value. This method of giving numbers to letter is used by John in the book of Revelation when he refers to the number of the beast as 666. It is fascinating that the numerical value of the Hebrew word “love” is exactly the same as the numerical value of the word “one.” Adding up the numerical value of their letters gives us the number 13.

“The Father loveth the Son” and the Father is one with the Son. God is love. God is One. We are kept in unity with God through his love for us and our love for him. We are kept in unity with the rest of the church through love.

36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Here we have the gist of the entire third chapter of John. The message of John is right here. The message of the Gospel is right here. The message of Jesus is right here. The message of God is right here.

He that believes on or in the Son has eternal life. This belief, this trust, this faith, is up to us. We believe, God delivers. What does he deliver? He delivers life everlasting in close fellowship with himself. This is the ultimate gift. We cannot earn it or take it for ourselves.

If we choose not to believe the Son of God, to not believe in him and to not believe in his words, we choose to face the reality of “life” without God. God may grant those who deny his gift the grace to live for many years on this earth. However, the end result of disobedience without atonement (read “at-one-ment”) is separation from the source of life. Separation from the source of life results in a horrible reality that no one truly wants.

The message of the whole Bible is clear… Choose Life!
