I don't buy the second argument that if the soul doesn't exist then free will doesn't exist.

A lot of atheists refuse to acknowledge God but they HATE God. They don't hate the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy but they hate God. How do they hate something that they claim doesn't exist?
