Children’s Day

Children’s Day was first established to initiate and promote action to benefit the welfare of the world’s children. It’s establishment was to see that children enjoy that which they are entitled to - their fundamental rights. Children’s Day was established not just to celebrate children for who they are but to draw awareness to children all over the world who have experienced or are experiencing violence in forms of abuse, exploitation and discrimination. Described in the term “Children and Armed Conflict” are the following violations- recruitment and child soldiers, killing/maiming of children, abduction of children, attacks on schools/hospitals and not allowing humanitarian access to children.
For the almost 200 million children between the ages of 5-14years around the globe forced into child labour and the millions more living in the streets, engaged in child prostitution, immersed in armed conflict, displaced and feeling the effects of war suffering physical and psychological trauma, suffering by differences be it religion, minority issues or disabilities, is today a “happy” day?
