CHILD NEGLECT AND ABUSE IN OUR SOCIETY

Children are God-given assets that are supposed to be protected and maintained. Unfortunately, the children are not being given the appropriate and maintenance.

The consciousness towards material acquisition, the desire to occupy "Olympian height" in order to be adored by the members of the society has become an obsession to most parents who entrust the lives and future of their children to the custody of house helps who can hardly discern their left from right. Consequently, the future of the children is mortgaged and destroyed.

Some parents also forget to realise the fact that to be prolific in terms of child bearing is to have innumerable complications. They give birth indiscriminately without taking cognizance of the financial implications as regards feeding and bodily maintenance.

To make both ends meet, they subject the children to destructive engagement such as hawking. This is child abuse. In the course of doing this, the children acquire diffrentv types of vices such as:

Petty pilfering
Robbery
Prosstitutuons.

Let also add, that government plays a big role in the neglect and destruction of children. First, the parents are not given adequate education or orientation on the ways and manner children can be reared.

Secondly, the children are denied good education which is supposed to widen their horizon and make them worthy, reliable and dependable patriots. Thirdly, utter disregard is shown by the role of loco parentis. The teachers who play the role of loco parentis. The teachers are not adequate remunerated: no incentive, motivation or stimulus. This often precipitate protracted strike action which further aggravates the condition of the unfortunate children.

In some cases, children who are able to struggle to acquires certificates are not given employment by the goverent. In their frustration, they take to the only way open to them- crime. The society in which the children grow cannot be exonerated.The entire society is hostile and insensitive to the yearning and desire of the children. Some members of the society are so egocentric that the pitiful plight of the children is not their concern. They invent diffrent means of exploitation. Some reap where they did not sow.
A child is a product of his envirinment, he watches and learn fast, various vices which because of his tender age lead him quickly to destruction.

Children can be saved from destruction if parents, government and the entire society show concern for their welfare. This calls for reorientation of attitudes towards everything that will make life meaningful for the children.
