All Positive Contributions Matter! Filling a Bucket, Drop by Drop...

When you look at the world as a whole, I believe most people sincerely wish to be helpful and giving.

However, we often end up not contributing because we get caught in a thought pattern where we believe that our individual voice or action is "so small it won't make a difference."

As a result, we choose to do nothing.

Steemit Is a Great Example!

Steemit is actually a great example of the power of a "Gift Economy" in which every voice does matter.

A lot of people feel "helpless" because they believe their tiny upvote "doesn't make a difference." And so they become indifferent and stay on the sidelines.

But if you look around, there are actually a lot of quite successful people using this community, who pretty much never get any of those so-called "whale" votes people talk so much about.

Another great example of how small contributions matter would be those donation boxes you may have seen at the airport: You're encouraged to toss your last few coins into a donation box, right before entering the security checkpoint — because you'll soon have to empty your pockets, regardless.

It may feel like it's a waste of time to give 34 cents to cancel research because "What difference could THAT make?" But if several hundred people do just that, every day, it quickly becomes something.

The problem is that we've been trained — culturally speaking — to believe that making a difference has to involve something major and very visible.

As a charitable non-profit organization, The White Light Express receives just about zero contributions from "large donors." In fact, it has been several years since we last received a contribution of 100.00 USD or more.

In fact, the vast majority of our funding comes in the form of $5.00 or smaller donations: Loose change, in-kind gifts, an artist who committed to give $2.00 every time he sold a piece of his art.

Similarly, it would be a shame and a mistake to view our tiny upvote — currently $0.008 — as "a waste of time." And so, we come here and give out some, pretty much every day.

Bottom like, just because it doesn't feel like we can immediately make a huge and tangible difference doesn't mean that we shouldn't step up and do the right thing, and contribute... in our own small way.
