Daily Celestial Challenge: Thursday - Forces in Nature

Hello friends, we follow this challenge #celestialchallenge, today we will talk about the different expressions of nature, this time I will talk about the "Brinicle"

A brinicle or finger of death is a sea cyclone, it is a column of ice, like an iceberg, but it forms inside the water from a plate of ice. As it grows there comes a time when it touches the ground and begins to extend in one direction, more or less, creating an icy trail in its path. Up to here everything very correct. Except for one thing: why call it, then, finger of death? One of the details that has always fascinated marine biologists, probably because of its morbidity rather than itself for a scientific question, is the ability to catch dozens or even hundreds of creatures in its path.

The formation of this curious column of brine has its explanation in the temperature and in the concentration of salt dissolved in the water. Water freezes at temperatures below 0. But the more salts you have dissolved, the harder it is to freeze, lowering the freezing temperature more and more. Once it is frozen, part of the leaves are "ejected" from the solution. With this clear, now let's go to the ice sheet. This, on a relatively nearby floor, is in contact, on its surface, with cold air, which maintains a temperature of about -20ºC. However, the water temperature is at -1 or -2ºC. Thus, at some point, the water around the ice begins to freeze, creating around it a thin layer of water that is more salty (and denser) than the water of the sea around it.
