Freedom of expression is a fundamental right or a human right, enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948. The constitutions of democratic systems also indicate it. Freedom of expression derives freedom of the press.
Article 19 of the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" reads: "Every individual has the right to freedom of opinion and expression, this right includes not to be disturbed because of his opinions, to investigate and to to receive information and opinions, and to disseminate them, without limitation of borders, by any means of expression. "
The right to freedom of expression is defined as a means to expose ideas, and this was conceived during the Enlightenment. The possibility of dissent fosters the advancement of the arts, sciences and authentic political participation. It was one of the pillars of the War of Independence of the United States (First Amendment) and the French Revolution, facts that stirred the courts of the other western states.
However, beyond what this right as such represents, we must remember that the human being is communicative par excellence and uses this tool to relate to others, in order to achieve a social coexistence, in search of the consolidation of common and collective purposes. Likewise, it is important to emphasize that this freedom implies aspects such as the spoken word, written and any other symbol or means that is used. In addition, this right belongs to all equally, not only professions such as journalists, politicians, artists, educators, lawyers, who make use of communication.
Undoubtedly, freedom of expression is the fundamental basis of democratic society, where we can express ourselves, issue our opinion on certain issues for common benefit, so that they can be debated without censorship. Let us not forget that the State, through its governments, must listen to citizens, so that through an open discussion of public affairs, society can formulate useful judgments on certain issues. In addition, it implies the right not to be persecuted for own opinions, to investigate information and opinions, to maintain the secret of the source, the free dissemination of knowledge and ideas, among others.
On the other hand, it is also true that freedom of expression has to be exercised with great responsibility, we must handle our opinions with certainty and based on arguments that can be verified. It is important to have evidence to demonstrate certain approaches.
It is for this reason that freedom of expression in society is a point in favor, which helps to ensure the fulfillment of human rights, publicly promoting the problems in different areas, so that the media can also point out these issues , to promote the search for solutions and benefit for all.
"Never accept young people who cut off the most important of human rights, which is the freedom to think."
