Today. March 21, 2018 holiday - World Day of People with Down Syndrome

The very date of March 21 was chosen not accidentally - it is a symbolic designation of the Down's Syndrome, which is caused by trisomy of one of the chromosomes: in a person suffering from this disease, the 21st chromosome is present in three copies. Translated into the "language of the calendar", the 21st day of the third month turned out.

Down's syndrome is characterized by a certain set of physiological characteristics - such as a "flat face", a skin fold on the neck, hyperplasticity of joints, muscle hypotension and some others. And most importantly, a child with such a disorder develops much slower than their peers.

Despite the widespread belief that these children are unable to learn, they can well master both self-care skills and more complex activities. In Moscow, there is even the only theater in the world where all people have Down syndrome. The troupe, which is called "Simple-minded", successfully tours and gathers complete halls.

In the same day in many countries around the world are various charitable and educational events, events and concerts, conferences and seminars. In the media this date is used to inform people about Down syndrome and people who live with it.
