The messy yet structured appearance of its cat is its most unique trait and the longhair variant exhibits even greater areas of curling. Along with its robust and stable stature, Selkirk cats also follow this composition in both body and temperament. Despite being active and rather large cats, their demeanour and general personality are seen as wise and composed. They are not often vocal and will display extended periods of patience and calmness in most situations. As companions, the Selkirk Rex is known to be an affectionate and loving cat.

Spending time with a cat is important from a young age and carers will be able to identify the physical and temperamental changes as a cat matures. However, the Selkirk is one of the rare breeds that do not differ through maturity. The curly fur and whiskers remain the same from birth as it grows. This is mostly attributed to the dominant gene present. It’s worth noting that the Selkirk comes both in long hair and short hair variations. As expected from this type of coat, continuous grooming is required but over brushing can lead to damaging of the coat. While grooming this type of cat is deemed to be a little more complicated compared to straight Shorthairs, there is much reward to be had when caring this type of cat in the correct manner.
