Melbourne Cat Cafe (cheating on Soju) 🐈☕
We visited the Melbourne Cat Café several weeks ago. I have been meaning to compile the images and type up our experience. However finding the time and motivation to do so, proved a little difficult. But here we are, better late than never. We originally discovered the Cat Café by chance several months ago when we were in the city. Unfortunately there was only 30 minutes left and they were preparing for closing. Furthermore they explained they rarely accept walk-ins and we would need to book a visit online.
At $12 for an hour visit, we visited and attempted to play with rescue cats. They were not up for adoption as they were specially selected for their temperament and personally to create a harmonious environment. Furthermore it would be too stressful to relocate the cats and try to locate and introduce new ones. Having said they, they do have a touch screen monitor for you to view cats/kittens that are up for adoption.
The café was a 2 level café which has been specially designed for the cats to freely access the café. The first kitty we met was the cute one eyed cat named ‘Ruby’. She was adorable and playful despite only having one eye. Since it was morning when we visited, we missed our morning coffee. So we headed upstairs to grab a coffee and have a look upstairs.
The first that caught our eyes was the set up and thought to ourselves that Soju would love to have this. What I loved was how they placed bird seeds outside the windows to attract the birds for the cats to see. I might look into doing something like this for Soju. She would love it. What I also liked was the bridge which crosses the room up above. It had a hammock like section in the middle, ‘purrr-fect’ for a cat nap.
Looking around, we slowly discovered more cats lying around, either up high or down low. Jasper, the white cat shown in the first set of images, didn’t seem to like me much. Just as I am about to take the picture, he turned away. But when my partner attempted to take a photo, Jasper did not move, in fact, he stared into the camera. Maybe it was just by chance this happened. But I was not convinced because as my partner played with Jasper, Jasper was interested. When I tried, Jasper would ignore me.
The cats were living the life, multiple large cat trees, plenty of spots for naps and bird watching. These cats love to nap. They were not as active as Soju, however they were probably tired of people constantly wanting to play with them.
On the walls they had images and names of the cats residing at the Cat Café, include a small synopsis of the cat’s history and personality.
Considering there were 15 cats there, I could not locate them all.
After failing to play with the sleeping cats upstairs, we decided to head back downstairs to play with Ruby. To my luck, Ruby was having a nap. But we discovered some of the other cats we did not see earlier. We also witnessed ‘Lynx’ bolt across the room and up the platforms, only to halt because someone was blocking the exit. Oh how Soju would love to have those platforms at home.
Lastly, and probably the most important of all, proof of Soju’s dad cheating on Soju. I had taken a couple of video and images as evidence of Soju’s dad playing with other cats. When we reached home later that night, Soju was all over her dad. He had brought out her most favourite treats as soon as we got home. I told Soju not to be too excited because her dad had cheated on her. But she didn't care. 😹
All images belong to @supersoju
Wow, I didn't know that Melbourne has a cat cafe O_O. And you didn't mention the food at all, did you go in only to play with the cats? I would totally understand if you did though hehehe.
Though the cats have to earn their keep, I think their workplace looks really nice and they look plenty comfortable
chillingworking and entertaining guests. And even if Soju's dad cheated with other cats, I bet Soju can tell that her mom also did the same, so she probably won't be nicer to you lol.We pretty much only went there to play with the cats. It is not your normal cafe. Since things are pretty strict in Australia, the type of food they could serve around cats is limited. There is no counter or kitchen area out in the open. It is all behind closed doors away from the cats. They had a waiter that came out to ask if we wanted anything. The coffee we had was nice. They served it in a take away cup.
Now now, there was no photos of me cheating on Soju, so Soju can't be mad at me. 🙊
But the smell, sojuchan! She probably can sniff other cats on your clothes and hands XD XD. Well maybe not if you bribe her quickly with the weed.
hahaha we were out til late that day. So any smell in the morning from the cats were long gone. If anything, we smelt like cinema popcorn....mmmmm popcorn.....
Aha. If that's the case I think even Soju might be fooled if you went out for a long time. What were you watching, Sojuchan? :D
Incredibles 2!!! hehehehe
It was a long wait for number 2 to come out and it didn't disappoint. Have you seen it?
Ahhh no! I am a big fan of the first one and I plan to watch it when it's available for home consumption later. I'm glad to hear that it's good since I love the trailers :D.
What an amazing place, cafe and cat retreat. We need more innovative shops like this. Soju has her own perfect home where she is spoiled and wouldent be jealous.
Great to hear from you again and great adventure
We sure do need more shops like this. But unfortunately Australia is very strict with food and animals together. hahaha that is correct, Soju has the perfect home and is always spoiled. I should show her this comment and tell her how lucky she is 🙊😹
This place is awesome! I could hang out there all day. What lucky cats! Did Soju smell all the cats on you when you got home?
Soju was too busy being bribed by her dad with her favourite treats to smell us. He opened the 'Dine Creamy Treats' and Soju was all over him. By the way, we discovered a new treat that Soju is going crazy for. It is currently on sale at Woolworths, Purina DentaLife Dental Treats. I have yet to test her which treat she loves more lol
Ooh, thanks for the tip, I will buy some tomorrow.
i wanna go and visit * ___ * omg, a cat cafe ! here! in melbourne !!! * ___ *
this is amazing <3
love the photos <3 <3 <3 that cat sleeping on the lil bridge thingy on the exposed rafter beams is super awesome XD
$12 an hour ! that's not a bad price, how long did you stay ? probably not more than the hour?
and hows the food :O
also soju probably can forgive your cheating with extra love/hugs/pets so maybe we can expect a soju post next time???? :D :D :D :D
The bridge thingy is my favourite too. Though I think that cat up there must be the boss of all the cats to get the best spot.
We only booked it for an hour, though they don't really keep the time and tell you to leave or anything. But we just left just before our hour was up.
We didn't order any food because it is not your usual cafe. Since the laws are strict here compared to overseas, they can only serve limited food and drinks with cats around. We only had coffee there which was served in a takeaway cup.
Well Soju did forgive her dad straight away when he bribed her with her favourite treat lol
A Soju post huh? Hummmm, I will have to think about what I could write about her without getting myself into too much trouble 🙊
Sounds like you are jealous of Soju and dad ;) You can buy all kinds of DIY kits to assemble as cat furniture or are you short of space? I like the ladder/hammock setup. My cats really love climbing the trees outside and I'm glad that they have that
hehehe me jealous? of course parents will always be jealous who their kid loves more lol just kidding.
I like the ladder/hammock setup too. And you are correct, we don't have the space to set anything up like this for Soju. But I will keep it in mind to when we buy or build our own place to have a special room which has exposed rafters and wall space to create a retreat for cats.
Soju doesn't know she can climb trees or the fence. She has seen the feral cats on the fence but never has she tried to jump up herself. I don't think she realises she is a cat. Plus I wouldn't want her wondering off on the fence or trees because there are possums around that are very vicious to cats. We had found 2 dead feral cats in our yard which were killed by a possum within 2 days.😿😿
Oh no! At least the very hairy cats are usually more sedentary
Ooooh...I know exactly where you are going with this you evil cat lady. This is a smear campaign against Mr supersoju!! You were jealous that soju was daddy’s little kitty from her email. You probably had it all planned:
“Honey, the cute kitty over there, poor little thing needs a hand. It looks sooooo sad.”
snap snap with the camera
hidden camera running
Soju didn’t care because she knew it was all a setup. She’s smarter than you think. 😛
But I love the concept behind this cafe! I hope it’s children-friendly/welcoming. Twin 1 is the cat girl, but both would love to hang out there and pet the cats. This might solve my immediate pet problems, by letting them play with cats and NOT bring them home. Twins are enough for me for now.
😹😹😹😹 God you are HILARIOUS!!
Looks like I need to come up with a sneakier plan.
This cat cafe is for sure children friendly and definitely welcoming. When we were there, there was a mother there with her two young daughters. She was probably doing what you are thinking of doing.
These cats have been specially hand picked for this type of environment. The one that was sleeping curled up in a bed in one of the photos would not wake up when my partner was patting it. He even gave his hand a little shake like you do when you try to wake someone up. The kitty did not even budge one bit. It kept sleeping!! That is how safe they know they are there and trust people.
I was afraid to pat them straight away because I thought you would need to get their trust first and have them come to you. But this wasn't the case when I saw my partner just reached out to pat them or hold its paw. The staff would also come to show you how to play with certain cats since they have different personalities. On the website I think they said the cats are most active between 12pm-1pm and 5pm-6pm if you want to play with them more. The time we went was at 11am-12pm and majority were sleeping. It is very close to Melbourne Central Station.
Weekends are always too busy, so we might make it an evening family dinner thing. I can take the girls out Friday evening and we’ll meet hubby there. Cat petting and then to a restaurant it will be when the weather warms up! It’s awful atm. But that’s our version of ‘date night’, with the kids, hanging out with cats. -sigh- lol
Before I forget...I got mail again. 😻
https://steemit.com/cat/@linnyplant/you-ve-got-mail-again-from-soju
Better than our date night. Our date night is grocery shopping and maybe dinner. The worst is grocery shopping when hungry. You end up buying way more than you need.
Oh no, mail again? What is Soju up to this time? I might have to disconnect the internet each time we go out now. Though yes, the weather has been horrible lately. Doubt we would leave her home alone again for a while.
Grocery shopping is date night? Oh wow. I thought we were bad...That’s...awful.
Hah, I keep telling you she’s too clever. I wouldn’t bother. Just stop provoking her. Lol

😸😸 hehehe that is cute

Wow, that looks like an awesome place and experience @supersoju!
Not just for being with all the cats in a cool place, but also for all the ideas for things to make life better for cats, at home! We've thought about creating little walkways and overhear hammocks for Curator Cat, but that will have to wait. But we do have a strategically placed bird feeder to serve as "kitty TV."
=^..^=
hehehe 'Kitty TV', I like it.
We placed a bird feeder outside Soju's window. Unfortunately the birds have not visited yet. I may need to move it out a bit more so they know there are tasty seeds here for them.
