어느 70 세 노파가 중병에 걸렸다. 그녀는 살이 많이 쪄서 비만증도 있다. 가족들은 이미 할머니에 대한 더 이상 치료를 포기했고 죽기만을 기다리며 장례식 준비를 하고 있었다.

검실(芡實)은 우리나라 말로 "가시 연밥" 이다. 검실의 맛은 달고 중성이다. 비허(脾虛)에 의한 설사와 유정(遺精)과 음도출혈(陰道出血)을 치료한다. 검실은 변비가 있는 사람에게는 사용주의를 요한다.

그러나 편작(扁鵲)은 말하기를 "행인불가구복(杏仁不可久服), 령인목맹미발락(令人目盲眉髮落)" 이라고 경고했다.

즉 "살구씨를 오래 먹으면 눈이 멀고 눈썹이 빠진다." 고 말했다.

천금요방에 보면 살구씨는 유독하며 해역상기(咳逆上氣)와 장중뇌명(腸中雷鳴)과 후비하기(喉痺下氣)와 폐기의 천촉(喘促)을 다스리고 해기(解肌)출한(出汗)하고 악독을 죽인다고 기록되어 있다. 또 기일핵양인자해인(其一核兩仁者害人)라고 쓰여 있다. 다시 말하면 "쌍둥이 살구씨는 사람을 해친다" 는 뜻이다. 쌍둥이 살구씨란 핵(核)속에 들어 있는 인(仁)이 두개인 것을 일컫는다.

살구씨는 질병을 예방해 주고 치료해 주며 항암효과도 있다. 1922 년 Robert 라는 미국 의사는 히말라야 산록에 자리잡고 있는 어느 산마을에 살고 있는 사람들을 상대로 연구하였다. 이들은 암을 전혀 모르고 살며 살구씨를 먹는 습관이있고 장수하는 사람들이 많았다고 보고했다.

또 남태평양상에 있는 피지(Fiji)는 인구 백만에 장수국으로 알려져 있다. 암환자가 없는 유일한 국가이다. 피지 국민들도 살구씨를 즐겨 먹는 민족이다. 과학자들은 살구씨 속에 비타민 B17 이 포함되어 있는데 이것이 항암효과가 있다고 보고했다. 미국 암연구센터에서 250 명의 암환자에게 비타민 B17 을 복용시킨 결과 248 명이 일정한 효과를 봤다고 발표했다.
