Opel Monza Concept: Is Range-Extended Coupe Clue To Next Volt?
Opel, General Motors' European arm, unveiled the first official images of its concept in Monza, which will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The name of Monza has a lot of history with the Opel brand, first appearing in a shiny six-cylinder coupe in 1977, but the concept looks very much in the future with its own drive mechanism.
Under the hood of Monza there is a three-cylinder, 1.0-liter turbocharger as part of an electric drive. Opel calls it a technology development found in the European cousin of the Volt Amperes - but the unusually small engine runs on compressed natural gas (CNG), not gasoline.
The concept is in the style of "braking" with large, one-piece doors, allowing access to the front and rear. The bodywork seems to be formed only by a few pieces, the sides disappearing into sharp front side cuts until a long, continuous metal band strikes over the side windows and ends with curling in the rear lights of the car. It is long, low and wide - just as it should be a sports coupé.
