The danger of staying in an idle car – 呆在没移动的车里也是很危险的

I was walking back to the office after lunch and noticed there was a car with its engine on, in the car, there was a kid around 5 years old, and a toddler on a car seat, both of them left unattended in the car. The kid was playing with the steering wheel. What if the kid accidentally released the hand-break? No adult should leave kids in the car unattended, doesn't matter if it's only for a short few minutes. Accident doesn't have any smell, you won't know when it's going to happen.
/刚才我吃完午饭走着会公司是看见一辆车里有两个小孩，一个差不多五岁左右，另一个是婴儿。那辆车的引擎还是启动着的，而且完全没看到大人的踪影。五岁左右的小孩很开心的玩着那方向盘。如果一不小心小孩释放了手刹，后果可能很严重。任何人都不应该将孩子留在车里了，就算只是几分钟的时间。意外随时都会发生，避免永远好过后悔。

Staying in an idle car is deadly, not only for the child but adult as well. Most of us find sleeping in a car with air-con switched ON very comfortable. When the car is not moving, especially when the air-con's recirculation function in the car is set to 'ON', which I believed most of us did, the car does not take in outside air, or if it does, minimal. The oxygen in the car is circulating and every breath we took, we are actually reducing the amount of oxygen in the car. When the oxygen level is low, we will feel drowsy. This is why when we stuck in a traffic jam for long hours, we feel tired and sleepy.
/呆在没移动的车里对成年人也是很危险的。我们都知道在车里开着空调休息是多么的舒服。当一辆车没有移动时，车外的空气是不会流进车厢里的。尤其当我们把汽车空调循环功能给开了，车里的空气只能在车厢里循环。每当我们吸一口气就会减少车厢里的氧气。当氧气不足时，我们会感到疲累。这就是为什么当我们困在车龙中，很容易打瞌睡的原因。

Whenever we feel hard to breathe, we can always roll down the window and let the fresh air fill up the cabin. But if we fall asleep in the car, it is very hard for us to be aware of the oxygen level. Without enough oxygen, our brain and other internal systems will malfunction and we might end up collapse and unconscious and worst of all, death.

On and off we saw the news that people died while sleeping in a car with the engine running. Addition to the issue mentioned above, a leaking exhaust system on a car that releases Carbon monoxide, a highly toxic gas, is also one of the main reason that causing death. The toxic gas can enter the cabin through holds in the car body and decrease the oxygen level. Carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless, this is why people named it as 'The silent killer'. When we breathed in Carbon monoxide, it gets into our blood, and if our blood carries a lot of Carbon monoxide rather than oxygen, death is next.

Other than the above, there are many disadvantages by keeping your car in an idle mode.

• Air Pollution. Idling release nitrogen oxides, which can do damage to our beloved ozone. Air pollution can lead to serious health issue such as asthma and lung diseases.
• Burning fuel for nothing. An idle car with air-con ON will continue sucking up your fuel, with zero millage. Which mean, waste of money.

除了以上，开着引擎不行驶的坏处还有以下：

• 空气污染。汽车会排出氮氧化物，这是其中一种原因导致我们的大气层受破坏。而且空气污染也会影响着人们的健康。
• 浪费汽油。当引擎启动着，加上空调，会使用到汽油。这些汽油应该使用在行驶上。这样是很浪费钱的。

So, next time when you are in an idle car, waiting to pick up your children from school, do consider to turn off your car, and wait inside a building or area with shades.
