Clear floor space in your grow space with this fan hack

The problem I had to eliminate in a tiny grow space

Hot, stagnant air in my grow space was causing serious problems for my healthy plants. Not only does an enclosed grow space need good ventilation and fresh air, wind is essential for strong healthy plants. If it's hot, problems only magnifies. Wind not only exchanges stale air with fresh air, it also strengthens the plant's stems as it dances in the breeze. The constant air movement pushing on plants stiffens them and can make them stronger for heavier flowers. Floor space is reserved for plants only and specialized grow space fans can be pricey, hard to mount and overly sophisticated. A tiny 6 inch clip on fan is better than no fan at all. I came up with an idea that fixed my problem.

My hanging fan solution and how I did it

I picked up a cheap plastic fan with a round pedestal. These fans are not too heavy and fairly inexpensive. I used two part epoxy to glue the pole to the pedestal and fan assembly. I did not glue the center adjustment piece on the pole because it was secure and would not slide out and come crashing down. I allowed the glue enough time to dry and cure so the fan pole parts didn't slip and fall out. After the glue cured, I drilled a couple of holes through the plastic pedestal base to tie up the fan to the ceiling of the grow space. I moved all the plants out from under fan and plugged it in. Holding the fan upside down, I found a good oscillating pattern where the fan wouldn't smack into anything. Once I found a good location, I turned off the fan to begin mounting it. I used heavy duty zip-ties that don't easily break, doubled them up and attached the fan pedestal to the grow tent frame. Because I didn't glue the middle adjustment piece on my fan, I was able to fine tune the adjustment of the fan up and down to the position I wanted. I turned on the fan one last time to make sure clearance was good. Finally, I ran the cord up along the top and plugged the fan into a timer.

• Typically no remote or fancy oscillating movements
• If you don't secure the fan, it can fall causing damage (you've been warned)
• Must glue parts of the fan together to prevent a fall hazard (second warning)

Don't make the same mistake I did

When I first came up with the fan hack idea I was so excited, I didn't glue the fan together and used flimsy zip-ties. The next morning I went into the grow space and found my flowers being molested and abused by a running, oscillating fan laying on top! YIKES!! The good news is, my plants (although smashed) finished flowering with out any other issues, broken limbs and all. So I glued the fan together and installed stronger zip-ties for the pedestal mount to the ceiling. I had made the mistake of rushing through and almost killed my plants! Don't make the same mistake I did. (Third warning)☺
