My Summer 2016 Outdoor Grow - *Afghan Kush, Cherry Pie, Afgoo*

in #cannabis7 years ago

A little background for you first time readers of my blog! (and thanks for stopping by)

I began to grow a passion for cultivating cannabis early in my University career, when a friend of mine revealed his closet growing setup to me while enjoying some of his home-grown stash. I was shocked, that I had been so close to a great resource for learning how to grow and care for such delicate plants, and never connected the dots.

So as I returned home after completing my second year of studies in Engineering, I decided I would not pursue a regular summer job - instead, I would dedicate my three month summer break to a skill more fruitful - growing cannabis!

I started my summer garden by researching the soils best for growing cannabis. I found great resources all over the internet, but none better than George Cervantes Cannabis Bible! All novice growers should pick up a book like that for learning and resources about pests, harvesting, etc. Here are a few of the products I used in creating a custom soil for all three of my strains planted during the Sumer 2016 Grow Season!

What started as a conversation with a family friend, and a few ziplocc bags with interesting names, ended as huge seven foot healthy plants filled with delicious buds! As the summer grow season last up to 7 months in lovely, sunny California, I began to take "progress" pictures to update friends from the University who were scattered around the country!

I was always astounded how responsive cannabis plants were. This picture, taken of the same two plants at night and during the peak daylight hours shows how much movement they undergo during a normal day cycle. These are truly alive and well! IMG_3908.JPG

As my plants grew bigger, I decided it would be a great idea to support them with custom built trellis's! These were meade easily with a few woods screws, wooden dowels, and some hemp twine!

Summer 2016 was an amazing experience for me! I learned a ton, and had a ton of fun taking care of my garden, watching it grow into three fantastic plants! Check out the pictures I took days before harvesting my first summer crop!

This was my Afghani Kush 7-Footer, aptly named "Abdullah" and one of its nicest flowers!

This picture and the picture of one of its nicest flowers, came from my personal favorite of the entire garden. It is the strain "Cherry Pie" a cross of Durban Poison & Grand Daddy Purple (GDP).

Good job, wish I would’ve done that in college! I was 31 before I had my first outdoor garden. I will put up a post of that grow soon when we r getting closer to outdoor season.

One thing I noticed is I prefer lava rock or rice husks over perlite. Perlite will break down into a fine sand overtime & lose effectiveness if you ever want to reuse your soil. The others hold up better over time

I can't express enough how much I appreciate the up-votes and the advice. I will definitely consider using rice husks and lava rock next time. My summer grow will be twice the size this year.

Im actually going to post my 2017 Summer Grow here in the next few days! Im really trying to grow my follower base on steemit, and I would really appreciate your help! Your page and your content is fantastic!

Ill make sure I stay up with your content! Thank you for your support!

Beautiful plant. There nothing like outdoor growing☺

I couldn't agree more. The six month season allows me to learn so much over the lifetime of the plant. Like in the title, this was my grow from a few years back! Im going to post more of my outdoor gardens, that I've done in the time since, and hopefully you can show me some love on those too! Throw me follow if you haven't already, and I will back! I want to grow this cannabis community on steemit!

Again, thanks for showing love & support for my blog! Ill make sure I go find some of your awesome content and upvote as I see fit! Youre awesome!

Oh man he’ll yeah! I definitely see your passion for cannabis. I’m always glad to follow along fellow cannabis people!. Your plants look great! As far as keeping the nitrogen defiency i usually just give a dose of high nitrogen fertilizer about once a week, but you got a great tool that I use too ....

Great job! She looks super healthy!

what brand/line of nutrients do you prefer using? any advice for nitrogen deficiencies? ive been troubled by nitrogen levels in all three of my summer grows.....

Were you using any nutrients? I have mostly used advanced nutrients, but I haven't had much experience with outdoor, or with soil. I grow indoor hydro. Any nutrients brand will have a good amount of nitrogen in the grow, which is what you use in the early stages. All nutrients bands will have 3 numbers on the front. It's called NPK. nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium. The first number is always the nitrogen. Just get a good 3 part grow regiment and it should have plenty of it. Nitrogen is what gives you the green leafy growth. You want it in the early and middle stages so you get a tall healthy plant. You don't want as much once you start to flower because it will effect the nugs, and resin produced. Also, mold and mildew love nitrogen so having to much can make mold problems a lot worse. If you use some good soil like fox farm or roots organic, and some nutrients I'm sure you won't have notrogen problems.

I was using OMRI certified organic nutrients, but only feeding my plants like once or twice a week. I didnt wanna burn them, but i think I ended up under-feeding them.
