Breaking Down the Two Main Types of Lymphomas (blood cancer)
What is the Difference between Lymphoma and Non Hodgkins Lymphoma?
Lymphomas are a type of cancer that arise when blood cells from our immune system begin to replicate uncontrollably to high levels. The increase in the number of blood cells disrupts the normal body function and can lead to death if not treated. Lymphomas are broadly characterized into two groups, Hodgkins Lymphomas and Nonhodgkins Lymphomas.
Nonhodgkins Lymphomas
- Most common and account for 90% of all lymphomas
- May be low grade (require monitoring and no or minimal treatment) or high grade (anticancer therapy required)
- Arise from B Cells, T Cells or Natural Killer Cells
Hodgkins Lymphoma
- Relatively rare (10% of all lymphomas)
- Only arise from B Cells
