CDC to investigate defunct Fort Ord base after hundreds of soldiers assigned there developed cancer
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will investigate long-term health risks linked to contaminated soil and drinking water at the now-defunct Fort Ord in California.
Fort Ord was in use between 1917 and 1994, with nearly a thousand soldiers stationed there in the last two decades of its operation. Those who stayed later developed rare, terminal blood cancers – including 50-year-old Army veteran Julie Akey.
