It has come to my attention that some people may not even know where Canada is is the world. That is alright with me unless they are trying to find it. So if you are trying to find it and cannot or perhaps just want more information, please read on because I'm going to help you.

Geographic boundaries

Canada is in North America. Canada occupies the Northern part of the North American continent. North to South Canada stretches from the North Pole (90N) down to the 49th parallel (49N). There are also some areas below that primarily in the Great Lakes region of Ontario and the Eastern provinces.

The United States is on the Southern border and the Arctic Ocean is on the Northern border.

East to West, Canada stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. You can portage across the whole continent without leaving Canada, but it's a long journey.

National Boundaries

Canada has land borders with 1 country and a sea border with another country. Also, Canada may or may not share sea borders with a few other Arctic countries.

Canada's only land borders are with the United States. It's the entire Southern border and the North-Western border where Alaska is.

Canada's North Eastern Sea border is with Greenland which is a Danish territory.

Additionally, Canada may share a boarder at the North Pole with the United States, Russia, Greenland, and Denmark. Iceland didn't bother. However, this is still being decided. Canada claims between W141 and W60

A lesser-known fact

Technically Canada shares a marine border with France! That's right the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon are overseas French territories in the Gulf of St. Lawerence which is in Eastern Canada (look at the far eastern part of that map).

Boundary Disputes

As mentioned the border to the North Pole still isn't decided. Also, some countries may or may not try to claim past this. However, Canada really doesn't have any serious boundary disputes because there is plenty of lands to go around.

There is a place called Hans Island between Canada and Greenland. It wasn't really known to exist when the boundaries were drawn up, therefore it wasn't decided who owned it.

The rest of the border disputes are with the United States. The marine border between the Yukon and Alaska is undecided. The marine border between Alaska and British Columbia is undecided in one place called the Dixon Entrance. And, the marine border between British Columbia and Washington is undecided in one place called the Straight of Yuan de Fuca. Finally, there is a small island between Maine and New Brunswick called Machias Seal Island that is disputed. There were a few other disputes with America but they were resolved.

The last dispute is the Northwest Passage. This is the historical Northern route to Asia. It wasn't really discovered until 100 years ago and only recently due to global warming is it perhaps going to become commercially viable. Canada is not excited to see it turn into an international shipping route.

Other Geographical Facts

Canada is the second-largest country in the world and is 9,984,670 km2 including water. Actually, if you exclude freshwater, China and the United States are bigger. The coastline is 202,080 km. The land borders are 8,893 km in total. Canada is divided into 10 provinces in the South and 3 territories in the North.
