What is Hook's Law

Hooke’s law is a principle of physics that says that the force needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance is proportional to that distance. That is,

F=kx

where F- force required
x- distance of compression of extension and
k- is proportional constant. It is called stiffness and is specific to the material.

Hookes’s law is a first order linear approximation of general elasticity theory. The law has huge applications in the field of civil, mechanical, geomechanical, and geoscience. I will later elaborate more on its applications in the field of Petroleum Geosciences.
