Japanese PM Invites Kim Jong-un to Build Mutual Trust

Tokyo - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday called on Kim Jong-un to jointly overcome mutual distrust between them.

Abe himself has confirmed that ongoing efforts are being made to realize the Japan-North Korea Summit.

As reported by AFP on Saturday (16/06/2018), in a television interview, Abe said that his party has contacted North Korea "through various channels", in an attempt to arrange a meeting with Kim Jong-un.

During his historic talks with US President Donald Trump in Singapore on Tuesday, June 12, Kim Jong-un reportedly said that he was open to meeting with Prime Minister Abe.

Tokyo strongly encourages the realization of face-to-face Abe-Kim Jong-un, to push back the discussion of the kidnapping of Japanese by North Korea decades ago.

"I want to take a step forward and solve the problem (kidnapping) after each of us wipes out the distrust I have a strong mission to handle this with my own responsibility," said PM Abe.

The Yomiuri Shimbun media reported that Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono was considering talks with his northern Korean counterpart on the sidelines of an ASEAN meeting in Singapore, which begins in late July.

During his television interview, Prime Minister Abe confirmed that his side is ready to fund denuclearization in North Korea.

After his meeting with Trump, Kim Jong-un declared "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

"It is natural for Japan and other countries to bear the cost (denuclearization) as it will benefit from lessening concerns related to nuclear weapons," Abe explained.

However, Prime Minister Abe warned that Tokyo has no plans to provide financial aid to Pyongyang without a resolution on the abduction.

The Japanese government officially registered 17 of its citizens have been abducted, but allegedly there are dozens of others who also suffered a similar fate. They are reportedly kidnapped to teach Japanese language and culture to Pyongyang's spies.
