First post! Lets talk business! My thoughts on executing fast, imperfections and motivation
So last night I was listening to a podcast by Gary V - I hope you know who he is! If you haven't heard of him, stop reading this and click the link at the bottom of this post to watch one of my favourite videos by him! He is the penultimate motivator when it comes to business and general self growth.
He spoke about how speed is more important than anything when starting a business, and I couldn't agree more!
When starting a business so many people get far too tied up about the small details, ironing out the imperfections and making sure everything is as smooth as silk. They fail to realize the market doesn't notice the small flaws, the imperfections to begin with. They pay attention to the general idea of the business or service, and decide within two seconds if they like it or not. They overlook the small details until later on down the line.
Another drawback to wanting everything perfect is timing. I'm sure in the past you've had such a great idea which you've simply sat on, waiting for the perfect time to execute. But you took far too long to take action, that the next thing you know - its already out there!
The beauty of this is, and why I call it a beauty you'll soon see, is that you'll never know if this idea would have been better executed by you, at the time it came to you or not. Having seen your idea executed by someone else is a right pain and kick in the face. Ideally it should make you want to get up and go and take action on your other plans. But why do we still fail to take action after seeing others take action on our very own ideas?
If you had simply bootstrapped your idea, gotten it up and gotten it out, you would have been probably the first in the niche or industry, and gotten the majority of attention. Now, this isn't always beneficial, but generally speaking it is.
I've experienced this first hand in fact. I've had plenty of ideas I'd sat on for months and months and months. I simply was too lazy to execute and take action. Namely, one of my ideas was to do with virtual reality, and the medical field.
I dropped out of pre-med in Oxford, and don't get me wrong, I still love medicine. I still read news articles, journals and keep up with the industry and new breakthroughs. I had an idea that when medical students train to be surgeons, they could use a VR headset, and see pre recorded operations, so they get a true feel for what it's like to be in the operating theatre, the staff around, procedures followed and protocols in place. This would drastically reduce the space and time needed to dedicate to medical students, and possibly even reduce training costs.
I sat on this idea for a good year or so. I woke up one morning and had a news notification. It stated that Oculus Rift were going to start recording VR sessions in operating theatres, and make it available to current medical students who are in training. Now, I could have implemented my idea the same day I saw the news, however competing with Oculus Rift, with very little money to begin with would have been a struggle for me. So I left it.
Two/three years down the line, I don't know where Oculus Rift is with their idea, however I know for sure that had I taken action as soon as the idea came about, I would have been in a better position than I am now. Would I have overtaken where OR would be with the same idea? Maybe. But then again, there was and is only ever one way to find out.
Now as this is my first post here, or anywhere in fact, I'm quite unsure as to how to end this off! But I will leave you with a final takeaway note - If you don't take action, you sit back and let others do the work that you need to do, only they will ever reap the rewards and create something.
Have you ever sat and waited on the sidelines, or simply failed to take action on an idea or business plan you had? If so, comment below and share!
