Don't do your best... Redefine your Best.

She does her best everyday. I would love to commend her for it, but I struggle to do so. If one were to do his or her best every single day, the individual would achieve incredible consistency. Nothing more, nothing less. So today your best is X output at Y quality over the duration of Z hours.... you are going to do this everyday? For how long? Will it be you or your audience who gets bored first?

Instead of doing your best, you should redefine your best. Every single day. Your "Best" is not set in stone. Your environment, challenges, and your audience's expectations will change often- so should your Best. As the challenges rise, your high mark should rise even higher. The value you deliver should never be the same in six months as it is today. Never.

I know some of you are thinking well, if everyday I do my best, won't I inherently get better and therefore my Best will improve. Maybe, but perhaps it won't. Why gamble on hope when you can create by intent? I love Hope, but I would never trade it for Control, Capability, or Authority. It is up to you to show the world a different potential today than you could yesterday. No one will stop you from doing so. "Bring Value," yes, but make sure you bring new value to the table. New value is what keeps my focus, keeps our relationship fresh.

Don't tell yourself you will do your best today. Ask yourself how you will redefine your best, and then go and do that. I will write on this topic again, and when I do it will be much better. I promise. So, how do you plan to Redefine your Best?
