I start by quoting this old popular adage “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. Quite a good number of us when presented with lemon signifying opportunity to turn a supposed misfortune or adversity to advantage to get fortune or prosperity, we tend to throw away such. Around us, we see opportunity to turn waste to wealth every now and then but ignore them.
For everyone, God has made provision before birth and in everyone he has deposited all that is needed to live life comfortably and to the fullest. No wonder He said His thought towards us is of good and not evil to bring us to an expected end. To fulfill this purpose of God however, is in our hands since he gave us the power to CHOOSE. He said I place before you life and death, choose whichever you like. The above is to give a background to the fact that God wishes us to prosper and do well in every area of life including our business ventures ditto boosting of family income. It therefore lies in our power to choose to take steps to turn our lemon to lemonade, look for every waste around us and turn it to wealth.
The original essence of this write up was to discuss ventures that families can go into to make extra income. I would like to say that it is difficult to enumerate businesses within this available space more so, there s hardly anyone who cannot mention dozens of businesses and trades. I dare to say that, with a leading from God, there is no business venture or trade that is not rewarding. it is good also to look for what we have strength and passion for.
I tried vehemently to avoid dwelling on farming, but as much as I tried, the more I see myself coming back to it like a recurring decimal. I think this is because it is a venture that was ordained by God right from the beginning stage and because virtually anyone can engage in it in different forms and to varying extent/degrees. I therefore wish to state that if any family determines to get extra income, it may not be out of place to look in the direction of farming. Yes, farming which does not mean that one has to go into the bush and seek acres or hectares of land which is not bad in itself. In the comfort of your home, you can plant a variety of things ranging from vegetables to grains and tubers depending on the available space one has.
A friend told me recently that he sold sugar cane of 4,000.00 from a portion of land that is not more than 4ft by 4ft and that was after he had given out several stock/stick.
Most of us waste the spaces we have our backyard. Today, there are improved ways of growing vegetables using small spaces. It means virtually anyone with small space in his house can plant something and make extra income for the family. The use of sand filled sacks or other containers can be employed and even arranged in layers. With good management, vegetables like spinach, pumpkin leaves(Telfairia-Occidentalis), Corchorus, okro, tomatoe, pepper. Etc can be planted both in raining and dry seasons. Easily, we can enjoy these things fresh, bless others and sell to make further extra income as we have plenty. The income may look small but as you gather them little by little, you will know that there is reward in not despising the days of little beginning. That effort can launch you into something big, really big.
About ten years ago, I was asked by a church fellowship to give a talk on fish farming. After speaking a little on the subject matter for which I was invited, the Holy spirit asked me to tell my listeners that they can make money from the planting of pumpkin leaves(Telfairia-Occidentalis). After I stopped, a woman raised up her hand to contribute. She said she and her husband had a plot of land in a swampy area. The land according to her was leased out to someone but later were asked to retrieve it for planting pumpkin leaves(Telfairia-Occidentalis) which they did. She said within 3 months they made the sum of 100,000.00.
You will do well today to start something. Buy ground nut, put it inside bottles and sell to friends and neighbours. Make chicken cage, take broiler chicks, 10, 20, 30 or more. In six to eight weeks, you will eat and sell. They look small, but every big thing starts small. Unconfirmed story said that the man who owns Kamwire industries started as a lone ranger cutting and grinding wires to make nails and nut from a very small workshop, today his business is worth Billions. (I stand to be corrected).
If you need to get training and acquire skills in some particular ventures, go ahead for you will be the better for it. Encourage your children to learn trades and acquire skills while on holidays. My graphics designer trained himself in the University from the income he was making, let us remember that no knowledge is a waste.
