Steemit Learning Challenge-S22W3; Trigger Finger"
If I talk about trigger finger then in medical it's stenosing tenosynovitis which is a condition which affects fingers and thumb results in pain, stiffness and restricted motion.
Types of Trigger Finger
• If I talk about Primary trigger finger then it's first type occuring without any other secondary medical condition or injury.
• If I talk about Secondary trigger finger it's second type mostly caused due to any underlying medical condition including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
• If I talk about Traumatic trigger finger then this type occurs because of direct injury to finger or thumb.
Stages of trigger finger
• If I talk about early stage then in this stage patient feels pain and stiffness in finger or thumb at early morning.
• If I talk about intermediate stage then patient feels clicking sense when he moves his finger or thumb.
• If I talk about advanced stage then patient feels locking or catching of finger or thumb so movement becomes difficult.
Symptoms of trigger finger
• Pain and tenderness at finger or thumb during movement.
• Patient feels stiffness or restricted movement in finger or thumb.
• Feeling of clicking or snapping sensation during thumb and finger movement.
• Locking of finger or thumb makes movement difficult.
Causes of trigger finger
• Repetitive movement and strain at fingers or thumb.
• Direct injury at finger or thumb.
• Underlying medical problem including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
• Wrong posture or prolonged objects gripping.
Treatment of trigger finger
• Using splint for restricting movement.
• Resting and icing for pain and swelling relief.
• Stretching exercises for reducing stiffness and improving motion.
• Using of corticosteroids for reducing swelling.
If I talk about diagnosis of trigger finger then through series of steps you need to Pas;
Clinical assessment
• If I talk about clinical assessment then ask from your patient about medical history which is about the symptoms, symptoms duration, frequency as well as severity of the trigger finger as well tell about pain pattren.
• Ask about patient occupation that is it related to overuse or continuous gripping.
Physical examination
• If I talk about physical examination then see affected finger or thumb that is their any swelling, redness or deformity visible.
• If I talk about second step in this category of diagnosis then it's palpation where you will press along affected finger or thumb for Identification of any areas of tenderness or nodules if these are present.
• If I talk about movement you need to checkout then these are flexion and extension of affected finger or thumb.
Assessment tests
• If I talk about first assessment test then it's triggering test in which doctor will ask patient for flexing and extending affected finger or thumb and observing any triggering sensations.
• If I talk about finkelstein test then positive test will indicate tenosynovitis that is linked with trigger finger. So ask patient for making fist with thumb tucking inside and then at advice of doctor patient will bend wrist towards little finger and at feeling of triggering sensations test is positive.
• If I talk about another assessment test then it's Notta's test in doctor will ask patient for flexing and extending his affected finger or thumb while doctor during movement will palpate for presence of nodules in tendon sheath.
Imaging studies
• X-ray are important for ruling out other underlying conditions including arthritis or bone fractures.
• Ultrasound may be useful for evaluating of tendon as surrounding tissues for presence of swelling or damage.
• MRI can be used to see soft tissue injuries so if diagnosis is unclear then MRI can help to actually understanding condition in depth.
All the mentioned points are important for making diagnosis collectively!
Finger joint massage
Finger strengthening with band
Trigger finger stretch
I performed finger stretch, finger strengthening with band and finger joints massage and what I find out most effective was finger joints massage because I was feeling massage deeply and I felt that the more I am doing it slowly the more it is effective!
I also felt a lot of relief with doing finger strengthening with band because I was properly feeling resistance of band as it was much elastic!
Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.
Observations
Task 1 (2.8/3)
You have shared a great knowledge about trigger finger, its symptoms, causes and it's stages but it would be better to add the name of stages that are written in the lesson post. I appreciate your effort.
Task 2 (3/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination, history taking, special tests and investigations. Excellent.
Task 3 (4/4)
You try the finger extensor strengthening, trigger Finger stretch, finger joint massage. You did the trigger finger stretches, finger joint massage and finger flexor strengthening correctly. Always remember to apply heat pack in chronic condition and ice pack in acute condition before performing exercises to relax the muscles and reduce stiffness. I appreciate your efforts.
Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from trigger finger or any type of finger issue. Thank you.
