Shorts borrow BTC and sell it, hoping to buy it back later at a lower price and keep the difference. Red line represents the amount of BTC borrowed and sold by shorts. If the price of BTC rallies, shorts will be forced to buy back their borrowed 40,000 BTC at market prices. This is called a short squeeze, and results in dramatic price increase as short positions get forced liquidated.
