Brexit Shambles and My Opinion

in #brexit5 years ago

This is just my humble opinion, so please voice your opposition and ideas of the situation in the comment section. Id also like to know the way this is being portrayed in other countries as I am a Briton, I can't see it from an alternative perspective.

Firstly the current situation is a complete mess, and convention is being completely broken. The fact that convention is being broken isn't the worst thing, its just that the lack of codification mixed with this new political situation has created an unguided process that only fuels the uncertainty. This doesn't help the government to find a solution which is proving complex and practically hard.

The political gridlock we currently have is caused by the split of opinion within MPs. As show by firstly the Prime Minister's defeat of her bill which was supported by about 1 third of commons, the other two thirds are; hard brexiteers who see this deal as a trap and a delusion of regaining sovereignty, the last third is the remainers who want another referendum and believe by blocking they could force a reversal of the process. Now as you can tell the PM has a horrible situation because she needs to gain enough of one of these groups to support her. But if she goes one way it would upset the other side as well as tear some of her currently loyal Conservative MP's away. The situation is not great and the only way I feel the conservative party could unite is a real threat of Corbyn getting in, if Corbyn was less extreme and a stronger leader then it could become a real threat. Under him though the Conservatives are not scared enough.

However the Conservatives did rally to support May in defending her vote of no confidence and so preventing another general election which in my opinion the majority of people and MP's don't want, if it did happen I could see the biggest amount of seats turned over in history with many constituencies showing their frustrations at the current political turmoil and indecision. And if there was another referendum the outcome would be remain, although the turnout would be so low due to voters showing defiance in their democratic voice being ignored the first time, this is just my estimation.

Solution wise its very difficult with experts struggling to come up with a compromise because essentially we want a deal that allows us to retain our sovereignty in all aspects whilst still maintaining that economic bliss. Its very hard for the EU to allow us to have that because it would cause a number of countries to queue up for that exit deal, the EU see the loss of sovereignty as a trade off for the economic bonus. Whilst the smaller countries feel the huge benefits in all ways and the grants the EU give them certainly help, bigger countries feel it isn't justified and the UK is an example of this trade of sovereignty becoming too much.

So the EU can't budge too much, I feel the deal we currently have is unlikely to change dramatically as the EU stated. But there could be some slight changes and tweaks that allow for some extra support. But again I don't see this happening and its becoming more likely to me a no deal scenario is the most likely at the moment. There is hope for those who see that as doomsday, the Prime Minister has stated she is willing to work with party leaders to try to resolve it. She has to deal with Corbyn who stated that these talks can go ahead as long as she agrees to rule out a no deal which to me seems like a contradiction, he talked about being open minded but demanded something be taken off the table...strange. The other leaders might be more favorable but unless she gains the support of her whole party she will find it increasingly unlikely to please enough opposition, this is taking into account the next party with any reasonable size is the SNP who will be very hard to crack as Scotland voted to remain.

So what I just wrote wasn't a solution because I have no idea to what will solve this, we cant go back as it would undermine the democratic vote, we cant go forward because of the political deadlock, so logically we will stay as we are until we leave the EU with no deal. But this fear could maybe force action and political discourse which I encourage, if this doesn't work or occur then a final attempt to prevent a no deal would be a confidence vote like we saw today which would force the EU to give us more time.

Messy as it is, this could cause a lot of reforms in our current political system which as shown is completely incompetent, I would say with certainty these people who are meant to be leading us, inspire me with no confidence.

This is all down to the stupidity of the previous prime minister, David Cameron. He might of felt like he had to give people a referendum but he should of said that it needed at least 60% of the vote for us to leave the EU. 52% almost exactly divides the country. He knew the majority of MPs want to remain and anything less than 60% makes it easy to push for a second referendum.

I don't agree with referendums. We have a parliamentary democracy. We can vote at least every 5 years. That's how these big decisions need to be made. If we have another referendum, it will be a farce.

Also what do you put on the second referendums?

The sensible option would be to have three questions and use the alternative vote system, so that wont happen :) The obvious options are remain, leave EU but stay in a customs union and leave both EU and customs union. We could all vote for our preference and second choice. The option with the least votes is rejected and then the second preferences count.

Problem is it would be so split it would be hard to get a proper majority and so the MPs would argue it's not Democratic.

AV ensures a majority https://www.britannica.com/topic/alternative-vote
Only problem is that the UK lost a referendum on the AV vote :)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_United_Kingdom_Alternative_Vote_referendum

2011 United Kingdom Alternative Vote referendum
The United Kingdom Alternative Vote referendum, also known as the UK-wide referendum on the Parliamentary voting system was held on Thursday 5 May 2011 (the same date as local elections in many areas) in the United Kingdom (UK) to choose the method of electing MPs at subsequent general elections as part of the Conservative – Liberal Democrat Coalition Agreement drawn up after the 2010 general election which had resulted in the first hung parliament since February 1974 and also indirectly in the aftermath of the 2009 expenses scandal under the provisions of the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act 2011 and was the first national referendum to be held under provisions laid out in the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000.
The referendum concerned whether or not to replace the present "first-past-the-post" system with the "alternative vote" (AV) method and was the first national referendum to be held across the whole of the United Kingdom in the twenty first century. The proposal to introduce AV was overwhelmingly rejected by 67.9% of voters on a national turnout of 42%.
This was only the second UK-wide referendum to be held (after the EC referendum back in 1975) and is to date the only UK-wide referendum to be held on an issue not related to the European Economic Community (Common Market) or European Union and was also the first UK-wide referendum to be overseen by the Electoral Commission.

Yeah it got slaughtered with such a low turnout
