Wind & Solar + Storage cheaper than Coal

in #brainfeed6 years ago

Coal is a relatively low cost fuel, especially for night time electrical use.
After all wind and solar are dependent on the sun & wind, which can fluctuate.
But using pumped Hydro, where solar pumps water to an elevation, and release to drive generators over night
turns the water into a "battery".

Of course using actual solar batteries is more common place and probably lends it's self more to individual users.
But Li-Io or other metal based batteries use a lot of natural & rare resources, so are limited as far as mass adoption goes.

The CSIOR is the research arm of the Aussie government, and this study is somewhat ground breaking in that it shows perhaps for the first time that renewables are actually cheaper than fossil fuels.

Given the big money that controls our electrical supply, I'm sure this will not be well received by them.
